We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianna Mcgregor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brianna, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
First, lets start off by saying starting and having a business isn’t easy. It isn’t for the weak minded. You have to find another type of strength and motivation most days to continue to push through. Often times when things aren’t going as expected, of course I want to give up and throw the towel in (probably like most people). Some days I’m ready to shut it all down and walk away because I’m like “what else can go wrong now”. But, I give myself a day to be sad and take in the disappointment, and the next day I’m recharged and ready to asses the situation and go back to the drawing board to create a new plan. So, for me, I would say my reason that keeps me going would be my customers. Of course you start a business because you want to put yourself in a better financial situation in the long run, but what I will say is 80% of me starting my business was to bring confidence back to women who may have lacked it or thought they didn’t have it. So, every time I get a review of my product from a customer it gives me fuel to add to my fire. It reassures me that what I’m doing isn’t in vain and if I can make 1 woman feel like this then I can do it for 3, 10, 20 or more women.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a high school English teacher. Most people ask OMG, you’re a teacher, how do you have time to also run a business once you get home? Aren’t you drained from talking, standing and looking at a computer screen all day? Honestly, I’m all of the above, but I know that in order for my business to get to a point of running on its on, I have to put in the work now so I can relax later. Being a teacher is rewarding and tiring, but the skills that you have to have to become a successful teacher has definitely helped me run my business. Honestly I face challenges every single day in my professional life. I deal with challenging students, parents, curriculum and everything else you can think of, but it all motivates me to keep going. Throughout the day I I often take a 2 seconds to take a deep breath, let go and continue to move forward. A lesson that has helped me along the way is being organized. Organization is HUGE when you have a busy professional and social life. If I didn’t have my planner, organize social media post, set appointments to speak with vendors and alarm reminders to complete certain tasks I would be all over the place and nothing would be done on time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A typical week I would plan for a friend vacationing in the city would go like this. A beach day is a must have. We would go to Sunny Isles or South Beach to lay out and enjoy the water and go to a nice restaurant after to enjoy the sun and scenery, or we would have a yacht day by renting a boat and going to Haulover sand bar. We would also visit a few restaurants and bars in Wynwood and surrounding areas. As well as visit Midtown area to try a few new eateries that are now open and do a little shopping.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I don’t have 1 person to thank for my success so far. Since launching and in the early planning stages I would have to thank God first for the vision and motivation to even get this far. And the support system that I have between my immediate family and my friends are all a combination of where myself and Her Cheveux stands. The support and encouraging words from all of them are encouraging and uplifting words that I didn’t think I needed. I honestly think that if I was to sell a trash bag, they would buy and promote it as if it was the best thing ever made. The word of mouth promotion that they put out is better than any PR team I could pay.
