We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Modell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always been interested in the idea of entrepreneurship because it enables me to wear many different hats – clinician, business owner, creative, admin, etc. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 12 years old and I really love the idea of being able to switch hats at different times so I am not doing the same mundane tasks all day long. I also am a very growth oriented person and growth is a large part of being a business owner. I am constantly learning when it comes to my work as a Registered Dietitian and business owner, which is my favorite part! Finally, I loved the idea of being able to control the hours I work, the type of work I do with clients, and building something for myself.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the founder of a virtual private practice Brittany Modell Nutrition and Wellness, INC, a weight-inclusive practice that focuses on helping folks heal their relationship with food and body and enjoy food again. My practice specializes in eating disorders, disordered eating, body image and eating with neurodivergence (ADHD/Autism). My work is rooted in self-compassion, non-judgement and self-care. I am proud to have a practice that aligns with my core values as a clinician. I am able to have a big impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of my clients. Starting my business was a lot of trial and error. In the beginning of starting my practice, I often compared myself to what other providers were doing, for example, should I offer packages or single sessions, courses, workshops, etc. The moment I stopped looking at others to make business related decisions, my business began to flourish. I focused on building relationships with other providers, which has been incredible for referrals and building my case load. I learned to stop comparing myself to other providers. It is such a human instinct to look at others but it is helpful to remember you are not seeing the full picture! At the end of the day, I learned what works best for me and my business and it is has been incredibly freeing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am fortunate to live in New York City and I am surrounded by incredible restaurants, museums, shows, live events and so forth. Our week together would definitely include some restaurants (new and old), a broadway show that I have been wanting to check out, and a walk through some of my favorite neighborhoods like the West Village!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My sister, Missy, who is also an entrepreneur! She has always been my #1 supporter since day one, whether it is lifting me up when I need it most, helping me with social media ideas or connecting me to people in her life. Missy runs her own creative agency, YES MAM, and is incredibly talented when it comes to all things creative. It has been so inspiring and amazing to build our businesses alongside each other.
