We had the good fortune of connecting with Bruneley Lalanne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bruneley, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
The best habit in my opinion is waking up early and planning your day the night or the day before. Waking up early is a habit that I began when I was studying for the bar, almost 10 years ago, and I have kept this habit. It has proven to be important for my productivity as a person and an attorney.
Waking up early is essential because it is the time of the day you are most productive. For instance, I get up between 4-5am in the morning. When I wake up, I meditate, repeat my affirmations, look at my “to do list” and begin my tasks. When you begin to work at that time, you are able to place all your attention on the matter at hand with no interruptions because most are sleeping.
From there, I work out between 8-10am, assuming I do not have any meetings, appointments, or court appearances. However, the point is, I make time for physical health because it is just as important as your mental health.
Lastly, I try to read at least an hour a day. Reading provides the ability to learn something new while simultaneously growing your vocabulary. I read anything from educational, fiction, and non-fiction books.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Florida attorney and I focus on the areas of criminal defense, DUI, family specializing in: domestic violence injunctions, injunctions, and dependency, personal injury, and probate.
I believe what sets my firm apart from others is the fact that our mission is bridging the cultural gap between ethnic communities and the legal system to decrease the likelihood of negative outcomes due to cultural barriers. Simultaneously, it is our vision to educate ethnic communities on how to adequately understand and navigate the legal system to avoid loss of freedom and disenfranchisement.
I have had many challenges over the years but I think one of the biggest lessons I have learned when it comes to your business is to be patient. I think in this world of social media, we desire success instantly. For example, if we open a business or start a new venture, if we do not see a return or profit within the first week or month, we think that our business or venture was a failure. Thus, you have to be patient while experiencing the high AND lows AND never give up.
As founder and managing partner of this law firm which is known for its ardent, experienced, and unparalleled representation of its clients; we, equally, give back to the community through pro bono representation, internships, and taking part in community forums to discuss the justice system and the laws.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was in town, I would take them to the beach. We would enter onto the beach from 73rd Street and Ocean. We would probably workout while watching the sunrise. After that, we would have breakfast at one of the local shops nearby. I love to eat; so for lunch, we would go to Overtown and have lunch at Jackson Soul Food, it is located at 950 NW 3rd Ave, Miami Florida. From there, we would go to Italian Ice for dessert which is located right in front of the House of Wings at Historic Overtown Miami.
After lunch, we would probably head over to Wynwood and walk around for a bit. We would stop by Miami Mojito and have some drinks. We would walk over to Brick and play some games (if there is no party yet). If there is a party, we would listen to music and dance.
For dinner, we would go to Dukunoo Wynwood or Coyo Taco and both of these restaurants are located in Wynwood. After dinner, head back over to Brick or go to the lounge located in the same building as COYO TACO.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a small circle of friends and colleagues that I feel deserve all their flowers while they still can smell them. This circle always pushes me and challenges me to be better and this can be by, challenging me as an attorney and an individual.
Although this list circle is not exclusive, I would love to mention the following: Houson LaFrance, Antonisha Baker, Summer Williams, Sandy Borisond, Kristen Goss, Vanessa Didier, Ramie Altawil, Dameka Davis. All these individuals are attorneys that have influenced, aided, and challenged me. These individuals are always striving to be a better version of themselves.
