We had the good fortune of connecting with Burcu Kan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Burcu, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process when starting my business was honestly to just have fun and roll with the punches. I really enjoy candles. They make the perfect gift, office/desk and/or house decor and when you hand pour them, it leaves so much room for creativity. Having fun with this business and project is important to me because once it’s no longer fun, my all won’t be put into it the way it is now. Aside from fun, I knew that I had to start somewhere. My site isn’t the greatest site in the world and neither are my photos or social media pages, and that’s okay. These things take time to learn, build and even hire the right people to get the job done but for me, it wasn’t a reason to keep waiting.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Outside of my small business, I’m a Jill of all Trades in the Human Resources/People Operations world. I studied Leadership and Human Resources Management after having a not so great experience at an internship when I was a freshman in college. School was definitely not for me but I’m very proud to be a first generation college graduate. The biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way both personally and professionally is to ask for help when you need it. Having things under your own control is definitely a good feeling but being human also comes with limits. Also, ask questions! The worst answer you can possible get is “No” and that’s okay.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ha! Funny because my best friend visited me in June when I was fairly new to Miami so I put together an itinerary that included visiting some beaches and having lobster rolls, a night out in Brickell and exploring Wynwood. I can’t wait for her to visit again because I’ve discovered so many more things and places that she would enjoy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Everyone who has supported me from day one with my small business, career and/or in my personal live deserves all the credit and recognition in the world. Although, I’m a firm believer in solitude improving psychological well being, everyone needs a friend and I’m lucky to have the best of friends, family and support circle around me.
