We had the good fortune of connecting with ByLavs Laura Arana & Victor Salinas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ByLavs, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
What was your thought process behind starting your own business? As any other creative person, we always dream for our work not to be forced. Working for yourself allows you to develop the clients needs your own way and not being so conditioned under other person’s team or ideas, not only in the creative elements but also in the schedule, place of work etc. Do you have a budget? How do you think about your personal finances and how do you make lifestyle and spending decisions? Budgeting in our personal life is something that we thought we knew until we started our own company and we found out we had much to learn yet. But to make it simple, after covering all the basic expenses we save 50% of the money left and use the other 50% for anything extra that we would like to do or have. Our spending decisions are based on the rule “spend as much as you want (staying on the budget previously said) in the few things we have chosen as our more relevant, and almost nothing in the rest of things. Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career? Any risk is an opportunity, and you take it if the opportunity matters enough. What is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand? Putting the hours of work and being grateful for every opportunity What value or principle matters most to you? Why? Being honest and kind, in business and in life in general. Because we have to create the world we want to life in, and if you do not make the first step to improve your life and peoples lifes n one will do it for you. Work life balance: how has your balance changed over time? How do you think about the balance? That is something that we still have much to learn about, but what we try is to balance our time in a way that we do not feel overwhelmed about any aspect. What’s the end goal? Where do you want to be professionally by the end of your career? That always will be be proud of the impact our work has made in the world and in the people. Professionally we want to be satisfy with what we have created, and it would not end until we are! Why did you pursue an artistic or creative career? We can not think in any other type of career that i would like to wake up in the morning for, I guess we are build that way. Tell us about a book you’ve read and why you like it / what impact it had on you. The four agreements, because it is a reminder of the balance in life, and how you are only the center of your own reality but no the center of the world. It gives you a healthy perspective of life and happiness.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We think one of our most relevant characteristics is that we truly care about the brands, the companies and the people we work with and for. So, everything is developed with the biggest empty and love towards them. It is not always easy because not all the relationships are easy but you overcome the problems prioritizing and always taking the feelings into consideration.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most people would come here for the weather and the beach, so of course we have to honor that, if they come enough time we would like to drive them to Devil’s den and the springs in florida, or maybe a day trip to the Bahamas. Here in the city the Art deco district is a must, it is what people imagine about Miami in the first place. But also the Design district that for us represents the new type of Art Deco architecture, where every building has its own personality and all makes you smile. Art galleries and the Perez museum are always in our itinerary followed by a good ceviche or cuban food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Obviously our families and all the opportunities they have brought to us.
