We had the good fortune of connecting with Calisa Hosten and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Calisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a young adult I’ve always wanted to start my own business. I would enroll in Entrepreneurship courses at YTEPP or Ministry of Community Development to help me prepare myself for my business start up. I also completed my bachelor’s degree in Marketing in 2020. These courses helped me to gain an abundance of knowledge in business management, marketing and entrepreneurship.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m employed at the Service Commission Department, my duties are Electronic Data Preparation. Where I am responsible for managing and maintaining a database. I’d say I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to reach where I am today. I remember going to work from 8am to 4pm. Heading to COSTAATT for classes from 5pm to 8pm and sometimes on saturdays from 8am to 11am. I’ll even have to leave my job on somedays to attend 11am to 2pm classes and head back to work to complete my duties. During those years, I had two kids. It was very challenging but I handled it well, with the support of my supervisors, partner, parents, classmates and my grandmother (RIP) she was my babysitter.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m not much of a party girl LOL. I’ll party occasionally. So I’ll take them to Maracas Beach, movies, long drive or even a breakfast or dinner date.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ll like to shout my kids. Jenali and Jemiah Mark. They’re my inspiration. I want them to have the things I never had as a child. While knowing that you also have to work hard for it.
