We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
To me, happiness is a choice that we must make every day. My mother taught me that at a very young age and I have lived by that idea, using it to help me find happiness in the smallest of things. The greatest source of happiness in my day-to-day life is my family and very close friends. Spending time with family has always been my favorite thing to do. Being with people who love you so dearly and experiencing life with them is just so fulfilling. I have a very supportive family, to which I attribute the happiness and success I have seen throughout my life. No matter what I attempted to accomplish, my family and friends were there to back me up and help in any way that they possibly could, and having that support brings me happiness unlike anything else can. In addition to my family and close friends, making music, playing basketball, and connecting with friends online through video games also really bring me happiness. I started making music at 13 years old, using a Logitech speaker, a Beats headphone cord as an AUX, and a super cheap microphone from Amazon. This was all I needed at 13 years old, a very simple setup that allowed me to explore a side of my creativity and intelligence that I had never explored before. The best feeling to me is that rush that comes after making a really good beat or coming up with a really good one-liner for a song. Luckily, all of the things that bring me happiness have connections to each other within my life, allowing me to enjoy them to the fullest every single day. I find that what we put into what we do is what truly brings us happiness, so I make sure to put 100% into everything I do so that in turn, I can increase what I get out of it. Being happy day-to-day can be very difficult, but having many sources of happiness and an optimistic outlook is key to ensuring you can find happiness on days when it seems impossible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is the style and message behind my music. I took the time to adapt the styles of my favorite rappers (J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Logic, J.I.D., and many more) into my own unique style that allows me to demonstrate my creativity and intelligence through my beats and lyrics. I am very proud of my recent album “Oak.”, as it is my first concept album, focusing on growth and mental health. This album has resonated with a lot of people who have listened to it, which has made me truly feel like I accomplished my goal of spreading awareness on mental health and growth. I wanted to create this album to show the growth that I have gone through over the years, while also giving people the ability to see that they are not alone in whatever it is they may be battling. Personally, I feel that a lot of popular music nowadays perpetuates a lot of mindless negativity (drugs, sex, violence) and has strayed far away from delivering a true message. Being a musician who has decided to focus on telling stories and creating art with a purpose has definitely been a challenge at times. It can be very difficult to always have a message or story to tell, but I have found that it is important to have a good mix of powerful songs and fun songs. Fun songs for me are the ones that have catchy beats and display more basic messages with good lyricism. I like to have a balance because I find it important that we enjoy ourselves just as much as we consume media with deeper messages behind them. I have learned over time that the best way to grow as an individual is with trial and error. I had to fail many times before I was able to overcome the struggle of finding my own style. I had to fail many times before I was able to find a sense of self and confidence as a musician and as a young man. I want the world to see me as a person, no different than who they are every day. I feel like sometimes we forget that we are all humans and all equal. I hope that my music can tell a positive story that brings more attention to mental health, to life experiences people may think are unique to them, and in the end, provide people with something far greater than simple entertainment. I just want to serve the people and show them that none of us are truly alone, in fact, we all serve a far greater purpose than we may realize.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I personally think that Miami has a ton of awesome experiences to offer. I would take my friend to the Grove first to get some food and enjoy the scenery. I started hanging out in the Grove a lot more this past year and it is definitely a really great spot to chill and enjoy good company. The next place I would take my friend to is the Brickell City Centre for some shopping. I love the ambiance of the area and there are some great places to shop and eat. After hitting some of the more popular areas (Miami Beach, Key Biscane, Vizcaya), I would definitely end the trip by taking my friend to my favorite spot, Matheson Hammock Park. I absolutely love being by the water and nature, and Matheson is such a relaxed place to sit out and just hang with a group all day. I personally have some of my best memories with friends at Matheson and I would love to create many more memories there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success as a musician was not something that came overnight, but something that I, along with many others, cultivated with time. My parents, Vanessa and Kenneth Williams, my brothers, Aidan, Andre, Corey, and Julian, my uncle, Ian Torres, and my cousins, Joshua Hicks and Andrew Martinez, have all blessed me with an insane amount of support during my journey. While many more friends and family members have shown support, these members of my family have guided me from the beginning, taking time to ensure that I grow into a strong and good person first, and then a good musician. I will never forget when I first showed my parents a song I made, I was so nervous I had to leave the room and did not go back until I knew they were done with the song. I did the same thing with a lot of my family the first time I ever showed them my music, but their reactions and support gave me confidence, which allowed me to become an even better musician. I could not be where I am today without these people and their love for me. My parents have supported me financially and emotionally through everything I do and I am extremely grateful and blessed to be their son. My brothers have been there every step of the way, even dropping everything to help me when I really needed it, and I know that they will always have my back. My uncle took me under his wing and taught me a lot about music, helping me grow into a well-rounded musician and not just a rapper, and while I still have much more to learn, I know that he will be there with me. My cousins have offered an immense amount of support, but they also taught me valuable life lessons while ensuring I put my real and best self into what I create, and not a fake and socially acceptable version of me. I have learned so much from my family, and I would not be who I am today without everyone in my family.
