We had the good fortune of connecting with Cami Sarria and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cami, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think any time you talk about entrepreneurship, risk is part of the conversation.
Before I decided to start my own creative agency, working a corporate job was my plan for the next few years. It felt scary, too “grand” of a choice to make. I thought, “I’ll work in the marketing industry, but under a bigger agency & spend a few years learning + gaining more experience before starting my own”. I thought I wasn’t ready- that imposter syndrome was really taking over my decisions.
It took only a few months of working under other people to realize that as long as I continued working directly under another company, my creativity would be limited. I knew I was doing what I love- creating content & working in social media marketing.. so why didn’t I feel fulfilled?
This is when I decided to make the jump & start my own business. Yes, I could’ve waited. I could’ve had “more” experience. I could’ve had “more” savings & safety.. but if not now, then when? I realized time & life would never align perfectly. It would never feel like the perfect time. So I took a risk, quit my 9-5 (with no clients), & started 2022 working for myself. Within 2 months I had multiple clients & making triple of my past salaries. But more than that, I felt fulfilled. I felt genuinely happy.
Now, 8 months in, I’m glad I took that risk. SELF continues to grow & we are able to help other entrepreneurs that have gone through a similar path.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SELF is a creative agency that focuses on helping brand’s show up on social media authentically. This has been important for me from the start. There are so many industries, and so many businesses in each one. What sets you apart? What makes your business different from the rest? At SELF, we focus on shining light on your brand’s essence & making sure that every piece of content we create resonates with your target audience. We immerse ourselves in each of our client’s brands & make sure we understand their core purpose, so that the content & social media can stand out from the rest.
I’m proud of our client relationships, we become close to our clients & end up falling in love with their brand. Everyone has a story, & we love looking deeper within & making that connection with our client’s brands & their audience.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are endless spots in Miami to visit. My personal favorite at the moment is Coral Gables- the restaurants are beyond excellent & they have fun bars that aren’t overcrowded.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One of the people in my industry that I look up to & have learned from the most is Chris Do. He’s an educator in the creative/business industry who has gone through every step of a creative’s journey. Many of the things I’ve learned & what pushed me to make that first jump was thanks to his podcast.
I also think my family & my partner Daily have played a big role in my story. When I felt stuck & unfulfilled, Daily was the first person to help me recognize what was pulling me back. She motivated me to consider the option of starting my own business. Once I did that, my family really supported me & pushed me forward to making that decision.
