We had the good fortune of connecting with Carla Tovar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carla, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking is unusual and often looked at with a very negative connotation. Not knowing the outcome of a decision is actually quite terrifying, so it’s understandable. However, I think risk taking can be exciting and life changing!
At the end of 2021 I took one of the biggest risks I have ever encountered in my adult life. After thinking about this decision for a whole year, I was finally ready to let go of a job that was no longer fulfilling. I would’ve thought that since this job was no longer making me happy it was going to be easy to let go, but there was so many more factors that went into it. I had been a part of this company for over 4 years and had met so many amazing people throughout my time there. Not only did I get to have amazing co-workers, I had made long lasting relationships with girls I considered my sisters. I had built a precise routine for myself and felt as if that was the only way my life was going to continue going in an upward slope. However, after shifting my point of view, I finally decided that I wanted more. I wanted more to life than to just wake up, gym, work, sleep, repeat.
Although it was a big decision, I chose happiness and to pursue what I really loved doing. Which is content creating. I love to create, I love fashion, photography, directing, modeling and just being my authentic self while doing all of it. As well as being more attentive to my social media platforrms such as Instagram and Tik Tok, fully devoting my attention to my YouTube channel was definitely the best decision I’ve ever made. I can’t say it wasn’t super scary at first, but I have finally felt the happiest I’ve been in a while. I’ve been working with brands I could only dream about working with, meeting so many amazing people in the process and much more.
My whole life has changed and I’m forever grateful I believed in myself enough to let go of that comfort. I can definitely say that being comfortable with a routine is very much just that, being comfortable. Nothing more, nothing less. I think everyone is capable of breaking that routine and taking a leap of faith in themselves to become so much more.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Ever since I can remember I have always had a passion for video creating. I remember getting my first laptop when I was 10 and all I would do is make videos on it. Singing, dancing, talking to myself, literally anything and everything. I love the process of filming, then editing, creating a narrative and having a final product that I have created.
I’m a very hard worker and I can say I always give it my all in everything I do. It has always come so natural to talk in front of a camera and I would say that being my authentic self is what sets me apart from other youtubers and content creators.
It wasn’t always easy to make videos though, there are a lot of components that make the process of having this as a full time job a little difficult. One of them being extremely time consuming. Like stated before, when I was working at my previous job, I didn’t have time to film or get creative at all. This caused me to become super inconsistent due to the lack of time I had. Inconsistency and YouTube don’t really mix well. I wasn’t posting weekly anymore and I noticed that I was essentially losing my audience. Naturally, this demotivated me a lot which made me go into a little bit of a rut. One month of not posting became two months, then three, and next thing I knew my channel was lifeless for a total of 7 months. I was scared to go back and try to make a comeback. I thought no one was going to want to watch my videos anymore due to the inconsistency. This really affected my mental health and when I noticed how important this was to me, is when I made the decision to quit my job. That decision wasn’t an easy one, but it sure was an important one.
I’ve learned that following your heart and your happiness is worth so much more than any amount of money or comfort. I can definitely say that I am now the happiest I’ve been in a while and I don’t regret taking that risk of quitting my job to follow my dream.
What I would want people to take away from my story is that anything you set your mind to is possible if you really want it. It won’t be easy, because nothing is life is easy but it is attainable.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite places to walk around in is Mizner Park. It’s an outdoor mall with so many yummy restaurants like Kapow, Yard House and Sloans for dessert. Even if you’re not hungry, its a beautiful area to take a stroll at! They’re also opening an American Social soon which will be so fun for brunch.
Another one of my favorite places to go have fun at is definitely Atlantic Ave in Delray. This is where to go if you’re looking for a fun night out with the girls or a spunky first date. The Ave has so much to offer, there are restaurants like Roccos Tacos, The Office, El Camino, Elizabetta’s, and so many more! They also have a variety of bars so bar-hoping is a must here! In addition, right around the corner they have Delray Beach Market which is also so much fun! The options are endless at this indoor market. There are so many unique food spots here such as ROOTS, a vegan restaurant with delicious food, as well as a fun up stairs with a bar and games like Jenga, ping pong, corn hole and more!
Now, if were in the mood for amazing Italian food, Carma Cucina Moderna is my go-to. The environment there is so fun and the food is insanely good. Not to mention they have the coolest, most fun drinks there and really good dessert too.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends have been my biggest cheerleaders throughout it all and I will forever be grateful to have such a supportive environment around me at all times. My mom and my sister are my biggest fans and they’ve always believed in me since the start. I can’t count the amount of times my little sister has voiced the fact that she’s so proud of me and my success and nothing in the world makes me happier than that. I love her so much and knowing that she looks up to me is my biggest motivation and fulfillment. My mom is my literal best friend (and first person to watch any of my videos) and without her unconditional love and support I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. Making her proud has always been a goal of mine and she never fails to let me know I’ve done so. Also, having so many amazing friends surrounding me is the biggest blessing I could ask for. I find peace knowing that my friends support me and will always have my back but will also call me out when it comes down to it. Having REAL friends that want to see you succeed is so rare I really am forever grateful to have such a tight circle of amazing human beings by my side.
