We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Merlano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been passionate about photography and I’m very grateful I could turn it into my profession. The decision to start my own business was fueled by a desire for creative independence—being able to direct the creative process, connect with my subjects, understand their stories, and turn them into visual narratives. This venture isn’t solely about producing images; it’s about creating meaningful experiences through my photography.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Art is a big part of who I am and it influences how I see the world. Through photography, I can do more than capture my subject’s physical appearance; I capture emotions and the stories that make them who or what they are. Photography isn’t just a job for me; it’s a calling driven by a love for visual storytelling and a passion to empower others through my art.
I think my biggest asset is that I create great connections with my subjects. I’m a good listener and observer and always do my best to tell my clients’ stories in a way that help amplify their voices, ensuring their visions are shared authentically and impactfully.
I have also learned through experience that there is no success without being true to oneself, so I always strive to engage in deep work and listen to my inner voice. While one can find inspiration in others and learn from their journeys, true success seldom comes unless one adheres to one’s core beliefs and ideals.
I also believe that discipline and persistence are crucial. I take my craft seriously, never stop learning and consistently improving my art, making sure to produce the best work possible, always mindful of the positive impact it can have on my audience.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami is an incredible city that I am proud to call home. I always look forward to showing my friends around and sharing my favorite spots and activities. The city offers endless options, with numerous neighborhoods to explore and plenty of things to do. For a perfect day, I would start with a nature walk, either at Bill Baggs or Crandon Park, or by strolling around Coconut Grove. I would then browse the charming boutiques and have lunch at one of the fantastic outdoor restaurants there. On another day, I might head to Wynwood to grab a quick bite at Zak The Baker or Doya, check out the vibrant Wynwood Walls, and make sure to visit the Rubell Museum or Superblue in Allapatha, along with the beautiful Parodi Costume collection.
South Beach is a must-visit for me. I love immersing myself in the Art Deco District and walking down Lincoln Road. I also enjoy spending an afternoon in the Design District, visiting the ICA or De la Cruz Collection, followed by dinner at Mandolin Aegean Bistro. Little Havana is always fun, too. I like walking down Calle Ocho and enjoying Miami’s Cuban vibe at Cafe La Trova or any of the Cuban cafes. And, of course, one of my absolute favorite things to do is catch the sunset at the Cleat in Key Biscayne.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been fortunate in my life to cross paths with amazing individuals who have believed in and supported me on my journey. I’ve had inspiring mentors, and I’m truly grateful for fellow artists generously sharing their knowledge and experiences. My clients, driven by their passion, serve as my greatest inspiration, and I’m deeply thankful for those who buy and support my art. Moreover, my family who has always been very supportive; My mother and my husband who have always had faith in me and are big fans of my art as well as my two daughters, each with their unique interests in visual and performing arts, continually inspire and motivate me to pursue my passions.
