Meet Caryn & Dan Rollo | (Caryn) Occupational Therapist and Strength and Performance Coach; (Dan) Strength & Performance Coach and Professional Bodybuilder (IFBB)

We had the good fortune of connecting with Caryn & Dan Rollo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caryn & Dan, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
There are currently no legal regulations or requirements in place for someone to claim to be a fitness trainer in the state of Florida. There is no prerequisite education or minimum competency criteria needed to claim you are a “personal trainer”. This is not only surprising and appalling, but it is also what propelled us to ensure that we uphold the highest standards possible within our own operation.
Having no oversight from regulatory bodies has contributed to allowing practices within the health and fitness aspect of our industry to settle into what we label as “substandard”. It has also paved the way for predatory behavior where we see so-called fitness professionals taking advantage of this situation and preying upon the ignorance and despair of potential clients. This sets a poor precedent and blurs the lines between the roles trainers should assume and the professional boundaries they should acknowledge while working with clients. Unfortunately, we witness far too many fitness trainers taking on the responsibility of attempting to diagnose, treat, and rehabilitate pain, injury, and illness, assuming the role of qualified practitioners, rather than referring the client to such specialists.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Throughout our professional experience, we could see the many flaws that inherently exist within our industry. The fitness, rehab, and healthcare industries perpetually market exaggerated concepts and false claims, which continue to create more harm than good. The quantity over quality mentality and cookie cutter treatment and fitness approaches don’t work, and are definitely not sustainable. It became increasingly apparent that we just viewed things through a completely different lens…and we were the minority.
The fact is that most clinicians do not know how to effectively and appropriately program exercise. Conversely, most trainers are not also credentialed therapists; therefore, are unable to evaluate and treat pain or injury. We find this huge gap in the system to be the core of the problem. With our model of practice and combined credentials, we bridge this gap.
We serve a very diverse population, from youth to older adults, and beginners to seasoned athletes and physique competitors. We are all human beings with varying degrees of changing circumstances and evolving needs. We consider ourselves to be “movement empaths” – specialists in movement, who are uniquely attuned to see and feel movement and performance through others. This is what allows us to provide the most comprehensive and highest quality service to our clients, while at the same time giving them an experience that they truly look forward to.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We love spending time in nature. Pompano or Fort Lauderdale Beach is a go to spot for us. Whether beach side sipping a drink or getting a bite to eat at one of the oceanside restaurants, checking out some of the local small businesses or watching live music, visitors would have an authentic taste of South Florida living. If you happen to be in town during a weekend when the historic Hillsboro Lighthouse is open to visitors for a tour, that is a really unique and beautiful experience that we would recommend. Also, if you or your visitors are looking to get a workout in, checking out Peaked Health’s home base training facility, Titan Gym Fort Lauderdale, would be a great experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to acknowledge and thank our families, clients and Titan Gym Fort Lauderdale, for their continued support, trust and loyalty.
