We had the good fortune of connecting with Caryn Rae Robin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caryn Rae, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Newport, Rhode Island is my hometown, and it was an extraordinary place to grow up. Historically, culturally, aesthetically and musically, Newport provided an education to so much that interested and certainly excited me. The Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals were the events of the year, and because my dad ran the popcorn tent, I went to the shows every night, of course sold and ate lots of popcorn, and was inspired by the best artists in the world. All I wanted to do from a very young age was sing and dance. Studying ballet and piano as a child was the beginning of a serious and beautiful journey. Moving to California at 22, I found a voice coach and shortly after met musicians and started gigging and mostly haven’t stopped. I became a voice and performance coach 10 years ago and have been able to share 50+ years of experience with students of all ages and backgrounds.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m 74 and have been performing for almost 70 years, first as a dancer, then as a singer (and dancer), then as a Miami HEAT Golden Oldie for 7 years. I’ve been coaching voice students for singing and speaking for 10 years and continue to do occasional singing gigs. I moved to California in 1971 and starting singing professionally soon after. There wasn’t a lot of money in club gigs so I sometimes worked during the day. I had great voice coaches along the way and honed my performance skills with 1000s of hours on stage. I recovered from nodes on my vocal cords and surgery after singing 5 and 6 nights a week, 5 sets a night. Strong vocal technique was imperative as I worked night and sometimes day. I continued to hone my skills and ultimately was able to develop a curriculum for voice students that I knew was powerful. I’ve received quite a few awards in the last couple of years, and it’s been thrilling to see the progress my students continue to make.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My go-to almost every day in California was Venice and Santa Monica beaches for inline skating. My favorite place here is Central Park in Plantation where I skated for many years until a few years ago. Growing up in Newport, RI and then living in Venice for years, I’m definitely a beach girl, and Dania Beach is my favorite here. Las Olas is another one, and since we’ve lived in Davie, Flamingo Gardens is amazing. And of course, music somewhere…
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Chris Cavallo, has been the most encouraging and supportive, and I’m forever grateful for that and so much more.
