We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassie Wegeng and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cassie, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important takeaway from starting and running my own photography business has definitely been the value of time. Being able to call my own shots and shape a career that flows INTO my life rather than dictate it is such a gift, and has greatly enhanced my overall wellbeing in every way. I say yes to jobs that align with my “why” and inspire me, so that at the end of the day my cup is full and I can be the best version of myself.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’m most proud that I can see myself in my work. When I first started doing photography, I did it ALL (as most do) trying to figure out my voice and what I wanted to say with my images. Now, when I look at my work, it feels like me! It’s joyful, happy, and light. I’m very excited that I finally feel confident about the type of work that I best align with which is swimwear, surf, and coastal lifestyle fashion.
Getting to this point hasn’t been easy, per se, but it hasn’t been difficult either. I think often times challenges are perceived as hardship or a negative thing – but challenges help us to grow and become stronger! So yes there have of course been challenges and bumps along the way in shaping my career, but it has all been worth it.
As far as lessons learned along the way, building this career has taught me that sometimes you just have to ride the wave. Every choice pivots your journey either toward or away from the end goal, but it can be a slow-going, organic process. As a type-A, goal oriented person, sometimes that was a frustrating reality. But I’ve learned to enjoy the process and learn from every experience.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When family and friends come to visit, we spend lots of time outdoors. I mentioned that I’m inspired by coastal living, so that’s exactly what we enjoy doing! Surfing, hiking, eating outdoors, and visiting parks and museums!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am so thankful for my photography coursework by fashion photographer, Nicole Hill, and the mentorship of photographer Chloe Hutchison. Having amazing women to look up to and learn from makes a world of difference when starting out on your own!!
