We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlie Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business, whether it’s “We Want To Film” (My Production Company) or pursuing projects as an independent director, was a natural evolution fueled by a combination of passion, ambition, and a dash of entrepreneurial spirit. As a director, I’ve always been driven by a relentless desire to bring stories to life, to evoke emotion, and to spark imagination through the lens of my camera.
The decision to venture into the realm of entrepreneurship was born from a deeply-rooted belief in the power of storytelling and a desire for creative autonomy. While collaborating with various production houses and agencies was immensely rewarding, I yearned for the freedom to pursue projects that resonated with my artistic vision on a more personal level.
“We Want To Film” has been a labor of love operating in Miami for over three years now. In that time, we’ve not only carved a niche for ourselves in the industry but have also expanded our footprint across the country, filming commercials and music videos that resonate with audiences far and wide.
Of course, navigating the waters of entrepreneurship and freelancing comes with its own set of challenges—uncertain income streams, balancing creative aspirations with commercial viability, and wearing multiple hats as both artist and businessperson. But the freedom to chart my own course, to explore untapped creative territories, and to leave an indelible mark on the world of filmmaking made every hurdle worth overcoming.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well it’s been quite the ride!
I didn’t exactly start off in the glitzy world of Hollywood. I was slinging plates as a waiter in Madrid while studying film on the side. Spain became my home for a couple of years, then it was off to Venezuela for three more years, then Panama for a brief stint, followed by a solid seven years in the vibrant hustle and bustle of Mexico City. One of my favorite cities in the world.
About my art, I like to think it’s a mix of passion, creativity, and a knack for turning limitations into opportunities. Some of my most memorable projects—the ones I’m truly proud of—were the ones with shoestring budgets but boundless creative freedom. It’s funny how those smaller gigs often paved the way for bigger and bolder ventures.
It wasn’t easy. Building a career from scratch as a foreigner in the industry was no walk in the park. On the other hand, yes, when you are committed, you just go directly to your objective. Staying focused was easy for me once I started to work on my stuff. But hey, every stumble and setback taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, resilience, and the power of staying true to your vision.
I’ve always thought that it’s important to make sure you give your best effort in every project. It helps alleviate the pressure that can come from an undesired outcome. While there are always variables at play, the key is simply to give it your all. That means reviewing each task, understanding it thoroughly, and executing it effectively. It’s about experimenting respectfully and taking the time to review and correct whatever challenges may arise along the way.
It’s good to remember that what drives us is the love for our craft, and it’s our responsibility to professionalize it. We’re artists, and freedom fuels us. However, our work has other facets that are equally important. Understanding the business side of things is crucial for advancing your own art.
I’m just a guy who’s passionate about storytelling, dedicated to his craft, and grateful for every opportunity that comes his way. Whether it’s a small indie project or a blockbuster extravaganza, my goal is always the same—to create something that resonates, inspires, and leaves a lasting impression on audiences worldwide.
And hey, if along the way I can sprinkle a little bit of joy, laughter, and magic into people’s lives, then I’d say I’m doing something right.
Cheers to writing the next chapter, one frame at a time!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friend swings by, it’s all about showing them the heart and soul of Miami. Here’s how we’d roll:
We’d start by immersing ourselves in the vibrant music scene. Whether it’s catching a show at the Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach or vibing to local talent at spots like Magic 13 Brewing Co and Zey Zey, live music is where it’s at for me.
Now, let’s talk food. When I’m craving a taste of home, nothing beats Francisca for some authentic Venezuelan cuisine. And bonus points for their killer in-house brews—talk about a flavor explosion!
And speaking of brews, Kush in Wynwood is a go-to spot for me. Their burgers are next-level delicious, and their craft beer selection is always on point. And when sushi cravings hit, Omakai in Wynwood is the spot for some seriously fresh and flavorful Japanese eats.
But you know what’s a must for me? A trip to the movies. Yup, even though I’m not much of a chatterbox during films, there’s something about the magic of the big screen that gets me every time. Love AMC and Silverspot. And afterward, we’ll grab a beer and some good grub, and dissect the movie to our heart’s content. Because what’s better than great company, good food, and a little movie magic?
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I must express my heartfelt gratitude to my family, Sarah and especially my son André, whose infectious laughter and boundless curiosity fuel my passion each day. Lasso, Danna Paola and Candy 66, in particular, hold a special place in my heart for granting me the freedom to express my creativity fully. Their trust in my abilities allowed me to showcase my strengths and refine my craft.
I’d be remiss not to mention Mavi Navarro, whose unwavering belief in my potential paved the way for my journey in the industry. Her support and encouragement was a constant source of inspiration, shaping the artist I am today.
And last but certainly not least, I must acknowledge the profound influence of Javier Talan and Sebastián Krys, two esteemed professionals whose belief in my potential propelled me forward in an industry where I was still finding my footing. Their mentorship and support have been invaluable, instilling in me the confidence to pursue my passion wholeheartedly.
In essence, my journey is a tapestry woven with the threads of love, support, and inspiration from cherished family, friends, mentors, and collaborators. Each name mentioned holds a special place in my heart and has played a pivotal role in shaping the artist and individual I am today.
