We had the good fortune of connecting with Chely Rubin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chely, what do you attribute your success to?
You might be surprised, but what really got me into this business was my dislike for doing hair at first. I kept avoiding it, but fate kept pushing me back. When I started as a hair assistant, I saw how happy people were with just a little change in their hair. That’s when I realized how much I loved helping people feel confident by styling their hair.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Hi, I’m Chely, but you can call me Che! I’m a 16-year-old high school entrepreneur and the proud owner of “Chestrands,” a braiding business that caters to people from all backgrounds and hair types. While I’m still learning, I have plenty of knowledge to share with others. My biggest lesson so far has been to embrace standing out – who cares if I look different or make mistakes? It’s your world, so live it! As a young Black woman in the business world, I’ve faced challenges that made my journey ten times harder, but they also made me stronger. I want to be a beacon of inspiration for young girls like me who dream of becoming their own bosses. We need more role models who stand up and inspire others, especially those who share our complexion and background. Growing up, I didn’t have that role model, so I aim to be that spark and push for girls who are hesitant about taking big steps. I want to show them that their dreams are within reach. If you have a dream, chase it! Leave a legacy, live a Greenprint!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think I’d take her to South Beach here in Miami. It’s one of the popular spots where we can really enjoy ourselves. I also love TGI Fridays—there’s something special about just sitting down, relaxing, and enjoying each other’s company. Sounds kind of boring, right? haha

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Before beginning I first wanna give a huge thanks to my heavenly father known as God, I thank him for the strength, the talent and the capability of being and reaching to where i’ve gotten and i know that with him and his glory that this is only the beginning, i also wanna give a huge thanks to my mom she’s one of my biggest supporters and although she’s really hard on me she makes me realize the importance of.hard work and how far it can get me
