We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Crass and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have deep thoughts about creativity and the creative process and it seems we are all conduits for creativity and art is just the medium of expression. I personally find I’m most competent in the visual arts and the reason why I pursue it is that simply I just can’t help myself and become anxious when I haven’t created something in a few days

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As I mentioned for me creativity is a compulsion and I’m constantly thinking of new photography ideas, video projects, or editing old drone footage in new ways. I get bored very easily and learning new techniques is the cure for this. The last few years have been building up the skills and experience to the path I’m on in becoming a fulltime travel photographer and filmmaker. The main lesson I’ve learned is repeated by many but it rings true, just keep creating. Make new things, try new things and just keep putting work out there because it will build your skills and expose your art to more and more people. It’s easy to give up if you’re doing it for the wrong reasons such as validation from others and I believe a true creative will continue to create art whether they are getting paid or whether anyone is actually watching because we have no other choice.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I used to be a big fan of Miami but I’m finding it’s becoming less and less in line with my goals and plans so I would take a friend on one of my rigorous and tiring but adventurous photography trips to one of my favorite destinations such as Iceland.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents continue to be the biggest fans of my work and I believe I’m underrated in general for the art I put out there. Most of the comments on my social media are along the lines of “you deserve more views/followers” but in the end it’s on me to create compelling content and I would be nowhere without the Youtube community and the thousands of things I’ve learned from others.
