We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Spinoza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, what do you attribute your success to?
I firmly believe the most important factor behind my success is the “persona” I use when making music, that of an anti-hero who is gifted in his craft but is constantly on the precipice between good & evil. People can relate because anti-heroes are often misunderstood good guys who by one way or another became more reluctant to following through on what they should and shouldn’t do. It is a constant echo of morality but with the ultimate message being “This guy/girl is tormented but their conscience never waivers, good will always prevail.”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Where to start? Well, as corny as it sounds, I’ve been writing independently since before kindergarten & am an avid book worm. I’ve won state prizes for both reading & writing in Florida while being classically trained in various instruments throughout my childhood. Though, funny enough, I never clicked those two ideas together and decided to pursue Biomedical Engineering as my college major haha! About two years in after securing my Associate in Arts I took a break off school to work & was hanging out with friends all the time. We would freestyle, not my idea but I’m down. Anyways, a short time after that I decided to write my first song ever to see the difference in written versus off the rip. Turns out, I write my lyrics like I would a narrative story. It all comes out as a brick wall of text that I have to adjust in my head to fit the tempo, flow, syllables, etc. in accordance to traditional music theory. This makes my work both hard to read and virtually impossible to imitate without first hearing it. Not only that, but it allows me to be more flexible in how I transition from “bar to bar” as sometimes I will blend anywhere from 2-8 bars all at once while the amount of rhymes in between each one keeps the reader engaged. I don’t do typical ABAB or AABB type poetry/lyrics, my style is inspired by Eminem but very distinct especially when mixed in with my own instrumentals. I only mention him as closest because his overall style of writing & delivery is comparable. We both rhyme constantly and raise our voices to put emphasis on the emotion. We both read dictionaries in our spare time trying to expand our vocabulary, when you got a lot to say and it’s a song might as well rhyme it, right? Ha

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh definitely we would go to Miami Beach and hit up Ocean Drive or Lincoln Road. There’s a ton of pubs, shops, outlets, festivities, food, everything is so vibrant and multi-cultural it really is a great way to experience the fun side of Miami!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents 100%. Without them I wouldn’t be here, today, writing these answers down as you and I see them. They are a constant source of inspiration and no matter how at odds we are they always have my back. They’re the best.
