We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Sturla and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christian, what inspires you?
I would say the photos I create are primarily fueled by music and my need to create. That is probably a common answer but when I listen to music, my mind becomes flooded with visions of different scenes. I feel driven to bring to life all the scenes in my mind, and transfer them onto a screen to be seen.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I was a child I loved being transported into another place through storytelling, and that blossomed into a love for creating those fictional places of my own. I started taking pictures of everything with my phone camera, and Instantly realized it was something I loved to do. From that moment I fell in love with the process of trying to create these places I saw in photos. Through this, I started to discover who I want to be as a photographer. It hasn’t always been easy and I know there will be more challenges ahead since I’m not done growing. As a creative, I think it’s very easy to get caught up in perfection. Along with the self-doubt, there’s the pressure of seeing a finished product multiple ways and choosing the right one. It can be a very complex decision. I find myself constantly evolving in the way I see the world, and that influences my technique. I believe personal growth is a direct link to creative growth. With that being said, I feel I have a long way to go before I am where I want to be. I would like to think my style evokes a cinematic feeling of walking into another world. I would like to be known for finding inspiration in places people would never think to look, and turning that into influential art. The thing I’m most proud of is the people I have around me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the people I choose to call family.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love going to the Wynwood art walk events, and showing my friends all the amazing artwork on the walls. It’s nice to be in such an electric atmosphere with so many other creative people.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Once I made the decision to take photography seriously, I was lucky to be surrounded by creative people who genuinely supported me. A close friend of mine Lisa Smith (@theluxephotographer) is a talented photographer whom I was able to shadow and learn most of what I know today. I’m also grateful to my friends for giving me a space to experiment creatively to better shape my style.
