We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Callahan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
To always bet on myself and trust my gut feeling. For years I worked in a corporate setting and I would soften my voice or go against my gut for fear of overstepping my boundaries. Once I learned that you can’t make changes by playing it safe, I was able to truly blossom and thrive.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Harmony House Day Program is designed for young adults with intellectual disabilities. We standout for a few reasons. One: we are a mobile part-time day program. We don’t have a physical location and the program was designed that way to promote outdoor activities and socialization at all times. Two: Harmony House is proud to operate in excellence. Our participants and their families always come first. Having a loved one with intellectual disabilities can be hard to deal with. Most families and caretakers have little to no assistance. We believe in providing excellence service in a safe environment allowing family members and caregivers a feeling of relief and assurance their loved ones are in good hands.
The road to where I am now was not the easiest, but it was one I would never rewrite. I started Harmony House two months before the pandemic shut down the world, but this was a blessing in giving me the idea to be completely mobile with my participants and activities. When faced with any form of business obstacle I stop, take a breath, and think of what I want my end result to be and work my way backwards to the goal. One key point I want the world to know about Harmony House is that this program is committed on distinction and giving young adults with intellectual disabilities the tools to socialize with their peers in regular social settings for maximum inclusion.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My go to for any social setting is a music venue or setting. Music brings everyone together. Next I would suggest a restaurant crawl throughout the city. Nothings better than trying new restaurants and food. Lastly a spa to reset the mind and body to bring everything back to a center energy.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A major dedicated shoutout goes to my brother Jamar and my parents Frank and Sherry Denson for all the support, ideas, and encouragement in making my vision come to light.
