We had the good fortune of connecting with Christina Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christina, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
I write about women filmmakers, primarily producers, writers, screenwriters, and actors working in 1930s and 1940s Hollywood. I’m inspired by these women because they chose alternate paths through a dominant structure that tried to box them in. They were determined to make change. These Hollywood storytellers were the change-makers of their times: the writer-producer Joan Harrison, director Ida Lupino, and stars such as Carole Lombard, Bette Davis, and Barbara Stanwyck. I find their work and their life stories more relevant today than ever because we live in a time when it’s important to fight for equality, justice, and to be strategic and creative as we go about it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
With my latest book, Phantom Lady: Hollywood Producer Joan Harrison, the Forgotten Woman Behind Hitchcock, I wrote about someone most people had never heard about. I wanted to bring the story of Joan Harrison to light because she helped forge Alfred Hitchcock’s career, working with him for thirty years, producing many of his films, and even making eight films on her own separately.
The book took three years to write, and many more years to research, and all the while, I kept asking myself, will anyone ever read this? How can I be sure that this story will find a public? In the end, Phantom Lady was well-received, winning an Edgar® Award and an Agatha Award. My biggest lesson was to put one foot in front of the other, and not get hung up with my own doubts, and trust in this powerful story.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out to my husband simply because he’s a wonderful mate and also a great person to bounce ideas of off. I’m lucky to have his full support and the benefit of his marvelous conversation every day. I would also give a shout out to my mother who sacrificed a lot while raising me and all the while kept a great sense of humor, wonder, and joy.
