We had the good fortune of connecting with Cindy Goff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cindy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I turn each session into a professional photoshoot with professional hair and makeup. I also encourage my clients to be creative. Even if someone is getting branding images for their business, I ask them to bring outfits that reflect who they are. But the most important detail about my brand is the ability to see people. Many of my clients, especially women over 40, don’t feel seen, and they are reluctant to be photographed. I spend time getting to know who they are and how they want to be seen.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a portrait photographer. Even though I photograph everyone, I love to focus on women over 40. It’s amazing that accomplished, talented women don’t want to look at themselves. The very core of my being is to have women accept and embrace their image, to see that their outer image is a reflection of the inner person. Once women accept and love who they are, nothing will stand in their way. Even though I have been a professional photographer for years, I hated my image too. It was being photographed by a portrait photographer that helped me to overcome hating what I look like. Once I got over this hurddle, so many doors opened to me because I wasn’t afraid of what anyone might say about my looks or age. This is the totally liberating experience I want to give my clients.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Virginia, in the Appalachian Mountains. Mount Rogers and White Top Mountain are literally in my backyard. Hiking and driving through these areas are beautiful. I would recommend the Dip Dog Stand for the best greasy “corn dogs” on planet earth. Also, we have the best bluegrass music in the world. There are many places to catch authentic, old time music. Abingdon is only a little way down the road and is a gorgous town with amazing restaurants. My favorite is The Tavern. The Tavern is the oldest building in the town and even has the scribbling of civil war soliders in the attic from when it was a hospital.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to thank my mentor, Cat Ford-Coats. I have learned so much from her about my craft and how to run a business.
