We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Fountain and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cody, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I feel like consistency in the industry that I am in was the hardest habit to keep up with. Back when I was just starting as a makeup artist, I would get so discouraged. There were times when I had more clients than I can take on and there were times when I wouldn’t have anyone for weeks. In these moments, I truly wanted to quit. Being in a beauty based industry is not for the weak, especially when you have so many persons doing the same thing that you are doing. I had to intentionally remain consistent with posting my work, and finding new strategies to keep my existing customers as well as attracting new ones. It was and still isn’t east but I found what works for me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a professional makeup artist based in Nassau, Bahamas specializing in bridal makeup. I can say that for me as an artist, I love creating a flawless canvas. Whenever I get a new client, they always say that they chose me because my work is so clean and flawless. Personally, I am not a huge fan of heavy makeup and a lot of colored shadows. I believe in timeless looks; a face that you can look back 10, 15 years later and still see how stunning it is. When I first got started in this industry about 12 years ago, social media wasn’t as big as it is now and the trends were crazy. Of course I followed the trends, but looking back at my work now it was like what was I thinking (lol). There were definitely a lot of challenges and obstacles I endured over the years. I remember coming back home from College in Florida with no money to my name, no clients and no idea how I was going to make it. It was so tough, everything I have now, every client was built one by one. I have to shout out my loyal clients as well, it’s also because of them my business grew to where it is now. Without their referrals, I wouldn’t have half as much clients as I do now, they truly are the best. I want the world to know that being a makeup Artist is not easy. Some days are low and some Days are high, we struggle with thoughts of doubt (I know I do), we lose passion sometimes and In a market that is so saturated we have to fight to find our place and where we belong. Through all of this, I still would never pick another path, even with all the disappointments. Makeup is my passion and I’ve learned that being consistent, humble, grateful and treating each person that walks thru the door with respect has helped
My business to grow to where it is now.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family. My husband Cyron who always has my back, my parents, Shelly and Godfrey for allowing me to use their dining room table as a makeshift studio (lol), my best friends Petra, Felicia and Kejuan for being my support system. My brothers Kareem and Gino for their love and support. My friend and motivator Scharad Lightbourne who continuously pushes me to think outside the box.
