We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Pool and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success has been to ignore what is considered “business savvy” and do things my way. For me, this means a few things. I coach and teach subjects and in ways that I enjoy coaching. I also provide services, education and a perspective that I would have loved to have found a long time ago. At the beginning of my business, I worried that if I didn’t make everything I did and offered as mainstream and palatable as possible, the business wouldn’t work. In fact, I’ve found the opposite is true: the more I stay true to myself and what I know, and don’t put edits or spins on anything for some financial or popularity purpose, the better the business does. And more importantly, I help more people in a more profound way when I don’t try to be as palatable or digestible as possible.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a nutritionist and I’ve been coaching people since 2007. I specialize in juice cleansing, plant-based nutrition and healing overeating. I also have a YouTube channel. I’ve personally been vegan since 2005.
What sets me apart from others is the combination of knowledge and experience that I have and that I coach in. There are few educators and coaches who have both experience in nutrition and juicing, but also in the deeply emotionally-based topic of healing overeating. You can find coaches with nutrition expertise, and you can find coaches with overeating expertise, but it is rare for someone to offer both. These areas are also ones I come from personal experience with; they’re not things I just learned about from books. I came from a background of food addiction and binge eating as well as health issues from my poor eating habits. Many nutritionists do not know what it is like to struggle with food addictions and to overcome them.
Over the years, I’ve become more refined in what I offer and educate on. I used to do a lot more teaching in strictly nutrition: macros, nutrients, meal balancing etc. Nowadays, while I still have that knowledge, I’m much more interested in helping people overcome the bad habits and their self-sabotage by focusing on emotional healing.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that it doesn’t work to try to be more like someone else you think is more successful or to modify what you really want to say and share in order to seem more universally appealing or to avoid people thinking you’re strange.
Another significant lesson for me is to trust my own experience and share from that place. I used to have severe binge eating and now I don’t anymore. I’ve healed it and that’s rare. I have tons of experience with juice cleansing and nutrition; I’ve done a 60-day cleanse and many shorter ones and have been working with people on them for over a decade. My diet used to look totally different and now I’ve been vegan for 17 years. I can trust my experience and that I do know what I’m talking about.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a huge fan of hiking and of vegan food. Give me a day outside with some good hiking boots and a nice hearty meal and I’m a happy woman.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have learned so much from others whose teachings and content have educated me and inspired me. The actions I’ve taken to gain my own experience have often come from the inspiration and encouragement of these people. The material that has been the most-life changing and influential for my work are the Divine Truth teachings (www.DivineTruth.com). There is nothing like them. I’ve gained my knowledge about nutrition and juicing from many different sources, but continue to learn from David Rainoshek who mentored me in my Juice Feasting coach certification.
