We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristal B. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cristal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started making music as a means of coping with stress and anxiety. It ended up becoming a huge source of joy and creative freedom for me, which then naturally progressed to me releasing music in an effort to connect with others. The shift from it just being a creative outlet to being a business was really organic and happened as I started to share my music with others through releases and live performances. I realized that if I wanted to share my music on a larger scale, I’d have to start treating my music and myself as a brand while still maintaining authentic connections with my listeners.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being an independent music artist is not an easy career path to take. There’s plenty of rejection, self-doubt, and feeling lost. It often means being a one-person show and wearing all the hats (artist, songwriter, producer, photographer, content creator, etc). But being a creative is the best part of my life! Even with all the challenges that comes with it, there’s nothing I enjoy more than making and sharing my art with others. It’s a healing and joyful process for me, and hopefully for those who hear my songs and need them. I’m really proud of where I am right now as an artist, and I’m enthusiastically looking forward to what’s next for my music.
The biggest takeaway I want people to have from me and my songs is that being vulnerable and honest is a beautiful thing. There’s magic in those moments, don’t shy away from them. It’s where you find yourself and how you form genuine connections with those around you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love hosting friends and here are some of my favorite places to take them when they visit south Florida:
– Dumpling King for the absolute best soup dumplings I’ve ever had
– MaMa YaTai & Donuts for delicious mochi donuts and Japanese-style corn dogs
– Davie Taco Bar for mouthwatering Birria tacos and horchata
– Dania Beach to watch the sunrise (so worth waking up early for)
– Wynwood for the art and yummy bites
We’d probably try to catch a show somewhere, so definitely one of the many bars/restaurants that host local live music acts (like Naomi’s Garden or Savage Labs Wynwood). For bigger concerts, definitely FLA Live or Kaseya Center. For more intimate shows, we’d check out what’s going on at Revolution Live, Culture Room, or Miami Beach Bandshell. Thankfully, we’re lucky to have a lot of options here in SoFlo!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to my family and partner! My life and accomplishments would look vastly different without their endless support. They’ve given me love and encouragement every step of the way. They’re my personal cheerleaders, number one fans, the people I play all of my songs to first, the ones who’ve witnessed every meltdown and talked me through my bouts of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. I’ll forever be grateful to have them on my team.
