We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristina Núñez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cristina, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
There are three factors that together have made me pursue a creative career. First, I have a very bad memory. It is very difficult for me to retain information, so it is not useful for me to store data. To solve problems, then, I need to improvise, invent to get by. Creativity then becomes a tool for survival.
Second, I always had a fascination with materials. Reams of blank paper, crayons, viscous paint, chalk, colors, textures and more colors. Being in the presence of all that gives me pleasure, joy, desire to do things.
Third, since I was a child I like to draw and paint, like every child, only I never stop doing it. I like painting, it excites me and makes me happy.
Letting myself be carried away by what comes naturally to me, I came to painting and I always want to stay there.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Devoting yourself to painting requires a lot of patience and a lot of love for what you do. When someone asks me how long it took me to finish this or that painting, two answers come to mind, one, the two or three weeks it took for that painting to exist, and the other, the 25 years I have been formally painting. Each ready painting is just one more stroke on the way inside and towards the painting to come. It’s never over, and that’s how I want it to be, I never want to feel like I’m done. Although I am the one who paints, I do not have total control of what happens with my paintings and that part that I do not control is the one that I like the most. Materials have their own voice. I paint to listen to that voice. I don’t paint to say something with my painting, I paint to listen to what the painting has to say.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my parents, for letting me be and supporting me in everything.
