We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristyn Myland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cristyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I thought that I would have more free time when I decided to start my own business. This was surely not the right thinking! Starting a business from the bottom up is not for the weak. I still have my regular job that I have to juggle with my business, which makes it much more difficult to successfully build my business. I put in more hours into my business and have days where I am working overtime to get tasks done on my TO-DO list. I am naturally disciplined so I don’t struggle to stay on track with content creations and marketing. However, for someone who is not disciplined…rethink starting a business! Overall, I would not change what I do for the world. I genuinely love doing brows and I am so glad I dropped out of nursing school to pursue my passion and bet on myself!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a licensed permanent makeup (PMU) artist. I perform three types of brow designs: nano brows, combination brows, and ombre brows. I am fairly new to the trade, so my prices are less expensive and more affordable than artists who are more experienced with 5+ years under their belt. I am most proud of the fact that I am a quick learner when it comes to PMU. I am not a quick learner with everything, but when I started learning tattooing it just started to naturally flow. I was able to get to where I am today with the help of my amazing father. He helped me build my brow studio literally from the ground up. It was very difficult as I became a whole contractor. After a year of blood, sweat and tears I am glad to say I have and own my own studio salon for PMU. I also would like to acknowledge Sherry for being my PMU mentor and coach. The challenges that I had to overcome was to not compare my work with others, especially those who have been in the industry for years. I’ve learned to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and PRACTICE! Practice doesn’t make perfect, but it makes better and I learn new techniques and ideas on each client. This is an industry where you are constantly growing. I want the world to know that I was on track to pursue being an OB/GYN; however, now I am a full-time tutor and a PMU artist. I do not regret my choices and I want others to know that in life you may think you know what you want, you plan it out for years, and then one day you realize that you are on a completely different path! That’s what happened to me and I would’ve never imagined that I would be where I am if you asked me a few years ago. I plan on growing my brand and seeing where God takes me on this journey!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in Miami would be Wynwood Walls! I am not the best person to be tour guide, but I know Wynwood Walls would be a pretty dope place to go for amazing photos, delicious foods, and site seeing! The next place would be South Beach for a good turn up session, especially during spring break in March! The next place would be Da Cave on Thursday nights as they have Ladies Night and R&B Music all night. I enjoy eating at food trucks and expanding my pallet, so I’d add ArtsPark at Young Circle in Hollywood to the itinerary! My favorite food trucks is the snow cones! The ice is so fluffy and nearly melts in your mouth! My favorite restaurant is Tap 42 because I love the Crispy Chicken Tender Melt Sandwich. For alcoholic drinks, I really enjoy Lorna’s Caribbean & American Grille. I like sweet drinks and they are on point with their drinks! In Sunrise, they have indoor sky diving which I haven’t done yet, but I know it would be a blast! They also have actual sky diving in Miami, which I plan on doing that very soon! Monkey Jungle is also another trip I wanted to go on but haven’t due to my busy schedule. Overall, there are many things to do in Miami and I’m sure anything you find will be a blast!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The person that I want to give the biggest shoutout out to is Sherry (the owner of Lewa Brows)! She is who inspired me to pursue a career in permanent makeup. I took her training course back in 2020 and it was the best decision of my life. Without her I would probably be miserable in nursing school! I also want to thank my best friend Dominique for supporting and encouraging me to follow my heart, yet know that the entrepreneurial lifestyle isn’t easy! Lastly, I want to thank my older sister Malika for believing in me and always making sure I am on track when others doubted my decision. There are those who did not believe in my goals, but they are now on board and I want to thank them for finally coming around!
