We had the good fortune of connecting with Damaris Edme and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Damaris, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our thought process stemed from passion. We have always known that we wanted to help the next generation of nurses be well educated, confident, and equipped to tackle the world of nursing. As former new graduate nurses, we truly believed that education should incorporate mentorship to ensure a smooth transition from classroom/theory to bedside/clinical practice. We wanted to ensure we established our business the RIGHT way. We made sure to get all of our legal documents in order to safeguard our business as well as set the foundations before officially launching our business. We believe having the right foundation in business will help entrepreneurs be successful.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ed-Me Nursing Tutoring LLC, a tutoring, mentoring, and skills practice service designed specifically for nursing students, first-time NCLEX takers, repeat NCLEX takers, and newly licensed graduate nurses. Tutoring, mentoring, and skills practice services are provided virtually and/or in-person for the convenience and safety of tutors and future nurses. Ed-Me Nursing Tutoring was created to augment learning and close gaps in knowledge through high-quality education (Ed), mentorship (Me), and personalized skills practice. We help guide our clients through their nursing school journey and usher them into their new careers. Each session is specifically tailored to address gaps in knowledge with concepts, test-taking strategies, and clinical/critical thinking skills that many students struggle to understand. We cater to different learning styles by incorporating multiple learning methods to accommodate each learner and challenge them to advance to the next level of their nursing journey. Although nursing school can be intimidating and overwhelming for many students, we commit ourselves to walk side-by-side with each of our clients and ensure that they know they are not alone. Along with our tutoring service, we offer mentorship and personalized skills practice to ensure that all aspects of the future nurse are being addressed. Additionally, the philosophy of Ed-Me Nursing Tutoring LLC is to prepare future generations of nurses to become world-changers in today’s society and provide high-quality, compassionate patient care. We provide individualized weekly progress monitoring and encouragement to alleviate any barriers that may hinder the growth and learning experience of our clients. Our students feel smarter, confident, and competent to progress to the next level of their nursing school journey, passing the NCLEX exam, and transitioning smoothly into their new career as a nurse. Tutoring, mentorship, and skills practice are provided by current practicing nurses with years of nursing experience as well as graduate-level degrees in nursing. Student nurses can rest assured that they are being coached and taught by well-rounded, clinically competent, and educationally prepared nurses.
We are proud that we have been able to impact those who have unsuccessful attempts at passing the national board of nursing exam. Many of them lost their confidence, some feel inadequate, and others even suffer from self-doubt although they know their content. We have seen their confidence grow with each tutoring session.
We got here today from consistency, passion, and conviction; we feel called to this business. This business is God-led and we treat our clients with respect, value, and care rather than seeing them as “another paycheck”. We are not doing this for the money, although the money is important. We are doing this because there is a need to build up our future nurses so that they can go out and be the best nurse to every person they come into contact with.
Was it easy? Absolutely not! There were many times we wanted to quit and throw in the towel but we are reminded that there are people who look to us for guidance and strength and we cannot give up on them. We constantly place our clients at the center of our business and that is what has kept us and keeps us going!
We learned to not be afraid to try a different approach. We also learned to charge what we are worth and what is fair for the services we provide. We do not believe in being money hungry, but we do believe in being paid our worth and what we know we can offer. Another lesson was to uphold our contract. We were initially afraid of losing clients or offending them but the contract is a way to protect you, respect you and them, and to set standards. Clients respect your business more when you set rules/standards and stick by them. It also makes you more professional too!
We want the world to know that our mission at Ed-Me Nursing Tutoring is to educate, empower, and mentor nursing students and new nurses to be the world-changers of tomorrow by closing the gaps in knowledge and increasing self-confidence. We thrive to see nursing students succeed and excel in their program academically while growing in their new role professionally. Our brand represents who we are and what we do. We provide high-quality education through tutoring and incorporate mentorship in every session. We are excited to announce that we will be offering one-on-one skills practice this coming year to ensure that our students are not only prepared theoretically, but clinically as well.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would recommend breakfast at a nice spot called Vienna Cafe & Bistro, then a nice bike ride along the beach. Afterwards, I would say to grab some lunch at my favorite vegan spot called Rootz or my favorite Haitian restaurant called Sterlin’s Paradise. I would then take them to Downtown Las Olas and walk along the strip. We could add some activities like axe throwing and horse back riding. We would then end the day with dinner by the ocean (no particular restaurant).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We want to personally thank our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, for where we are today. Every decision and every move we make is grounded in our Christian beliefs. We then want to thank our friends, family, and co-workers who have poured into us, provided encouragement, and are still rooting us on in our journey.
