We had the good fortune of connecting with Dameka Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dameka, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When representing people, you have to fight against isolation, doubt, and exhaustion. As a Tribe, we all know that the real work begins with ourselves. Each and every day and with the love of myself and what I represent, I have found the same to be true not only in practicing law, but also in running for office.

Running for office has introduced me to the weakest part of myself: it introduced me to my self-doubt and risk-taking. The part of myself that says you are not qualified. You cannot do it. The part of myself that whispers in my ear, you can’t do this, you will lose.

Particularly, running for office during a health pandemic presents challenges that make it unsafe to meet and connect with people in person. As a mother and a criminal defense attorney, every day I have to put myself at risk healthwise, and I have to manage the risk to keep fighting. The biggest factor that has helped me maintain the necessary strength to continue goes back to my “Why”: I am running in this race because I believe in equality. Equality is my “Why.” Why? Because all people deserve justice.

So I remind myself:
Keep an open mind.
Get creative.
Take a risk.
Work on yourself.
We will get there with Equality.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the founder of Davis Legal Center, a leading criminal defense and civil rights law firm in Hollywood, Florida. Under my leadership, the firm participates in countless cases advocating for victims of federal civil rights violations and defending the accused with the aim of restoring human dignity and ensuring equal access to justice.

I am most proud that my firm is led by women of color. We strive to keep families together and it is not an easy task. I am most excited about moving our firm forward and working to exonerate the wrongfully convicted. I have learned several lessons along the way but the most important has been to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

I want the world to know that Davis Legal Center is centered around making sure that everyone has equal access to justice and that we are raising the bar in the justice system.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In my view, the most fun, interesting, exciting people to meet are locals. The people that build our communities every day. I would like to take a friend to the real part of the city so that we can learn authentically about an area.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I lean most on the skills from the Trial Lawyers College because “Your tribe will always save you.” Thankfully, every time that I get lost in self-doubt, I will receive a hug when I need it most, a letter in the mail, an email from someone that seems to catch me every time. Every time.
