We had the good fortune of connecting with Damon Sharpe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Damon, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Early in my career I was an absolute workaholic. I would travel to amazing places and never leave the studio to explore. Now I make time to experience new things and truly enjoy the fact that I get to travel the world to do what I love. I thought I had to work double sessions and pack in meetings every day to be successful. It took time to discover with some balance I actually achieve more and am happier and fulfilled. Exercise, diet and time to unwind and relax refills my creative well. Spending time with loved ones gives me inspiration for my artistry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I had many ups and down in my career. As a teenager I was catapulted to teen idol status as a member of the boy band Guys Next Door. We had a tv show on NBC and a record deal on EMI. We had dolls, a board game, t shirts, buttons and posters you name it. As quickly as it was a success it was over. I literally went from taking pictures with Will Smith to a couple years later serving him a Pepsi as a waiter. It was a very humbling experience I am grateful for to this day. I was signed to many more failed record deals after that. Once I was fortunate enough to have a new chapter of success open up as a Producer and Writer I have not looked back. I’ve been able to work with some of the biggest talents in the world and it has afforded me a great life! I now make sure I balance and give back and mentor whenever I can. I am also in a new reinvention chapter as a DJ signed to Armada Music. I have amassed over 45M steams on Spotify as an artist. In 2021 sky is the limit!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorites are the Magic Castle a private club with amazing magicians who perform. I love Fig & Olive, Firefly and Gracias Madre those are a few of my favorite restaurants. LA has a ton of really cool areas. Downtown, Hollywood, The Valley and the beaches. It’s hard to run out of places to explore!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout the amazing Ric Wake. He is a legendary Grammy Award wining Producer who took me under his wing and mentored me as a producer and songwriter. He was my publisher for 7 years and gave me my start in the business. I owe him an enormous amount of gratitude. My parents also deserve a tremendous shoutout! They moved to LA so I could pursue my career. I will never forget that and love them so much for doing so.
