We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Hobday and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After working as a graphic designer for almost 20 years I had enough of the 9-5. I saw how others were selling online and how easy it looked. I thought, I can do that! The only problem for me was that I was working full-time and had no time to do my art. I started using the internet to sell my work as it was quick and I could easily upload images during my lunch breaks and after work. At home, in my studio, I had a collection of art that I had accumulated over the years and it was all just waiting there to be sold. I wanted to do my own thing. The true meaning of success is enjoying and loving what you do every day so that was my plan going forward.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work explores many subjects and techniques. I’m always looking for new ideas and ways to improve and evolve.
I now work with many online retailers in the home decor and interior design industry. Companies globally license my art. It fascinates me to see just how many places my paintings and drawings can be purchased online.
I’m sure the internet has played a major role in my business success. My online shops are a kind of portfolio for many of my clients. Without promotion or any paid advertising, all my business connections and commissions have been made by people contacting me after seeing my work online.
I’ve learned that the customer is the most important part of my business. Being friendly and accommodating to people is worth its weight in gold. One compelling goal for me at the start of my business was to have not just one stream of income. I wanted to create as many connections as possible in different countries, not just the UK. Also, another target for me was to cover all bases in terms of selling my art. I now sell downloads, prints, and originals. I license my art on an exclusive basis and as open editions. I follow the interior design world intensely, it pays to have an awareness of colours and trends when creating art.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandfather inspired me from an early age to draw.
