We had the good fortune of connecting with Dana Harrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dana, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born & raised in and around Charleston, SC. Lowcountry living definitely shaped my love for all things hand made! Throughout my childhood I would go down to the market on Meeting St. and watch the ladies weave baskets for hours! They were strong, proud women who genuinely loved their craft. In fact, every vendor booth was just full of beautifully hand made items & they were run by the makers themselves. I’ve been to a lot of markets, but nothing thus far has been quite as special or authentic as the Historic Charleston City Market. When I sell my hand crafted goods at markets in Atlanta today I always feel strong and proud and hope that some kid wanders over to ask me my story and maybe carry that same sense of wonderment with them throughout their life, too!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I usually call my creative calling a side hustle but if I’m keeping it classy It’s a small creative business! I illustrate, chalk & paint signs or murals for other small businesses. I also craft and sell my art at local Atlanta markets seasonally.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Eat- Farm Burger 🍔 it’s local farm to table & affordable! Plus the staff is AMAZING 😉 Drink- Kimball House 🍸their oyster happy hour is to die for and makes me feel like I’m home in Charleston!
Visit- the High Museum of Art, duh!
Hang- Joystick! An arcade for grown intellectuals 😉
I mean we don’t call it “hotlanta” just for the temperatures! This city is on fire right now!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Charleston City Market & my mother for taking me there as a kid and for nurturing my love for all things hand made or crafted!
