We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniella Genas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniella, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I started my first business, I had zero work life balance. I worked all day and night, 7 days a week. I very rarely took breaks or time off. That led to me experiencing burnout, high stress levels and a variety of other negative physical symptoms. Working that hard didn’t prevent the final result, which was me having to sell the business. I therefore made the conscious decision to take a different approach in my current business. I set it up in a way that would allow for greater time freedom and balance. I am older and wiser and refuse to get trapped in an overworking and poor health cycle. My diary is managed much more effectively with time scheduled each day for breaks and down time. I have rest days every week which sometimes fall on the weekends, but also may fall during the week. When I feel like I am doing too much, I will reschedule appointments or take a nap. Whatever is necessary to restore my equilibrium, I will do it. I also make a point to spend time with family, friends and doing fun things. It doesn’t make me any less ambitious, it just means I recognise that in order for me to perform at my best, I need to be good within myself. That can only be achieved when I lead a balanced life. I think it is essential for more entrepreneurs and business owners to take this approach. What is the use of making money in your business if you are to sick and depleted to enjoy it?
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
She’s the Boss International supports ambitious entrepreneurs to build and grow, profitable, sustainable, systems driven businesses, that are not owner reliant. We do this through a range of consultancy, coaching, mentoring, training and accountability packages and programmes. We have a proven track record of supporting clients to grow their business by 6 and 7 figures. Our support is underpinned by the VISSA Growth framework, developed by myself after extensive research and testing. We focus specifically on Vision, Innovation, Strategy, Systems & Processes and Accountability.
We deliver all of our interventions on line to suit the busy schedules of our clients. We have supported businesses from a vast array of sectors, business stages and sizes, in the UK and internationally. We also provide online and in person training packages and workshops for higher education institutions and enterprise agencies.
Unlike many business support providers, I have launched and sold my own successful business, studied business to a high level (I have both a Masters in Enterprise and an MBA) and trained in business (I am an alumni of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small business programme and a range of other business training programmes). I therefore build my support from lived experience as well as extensive knowledge.
I am incredibly excited about what the future holds for both the business and also for the clients we work with. We have recently launched a range of digital products which we will be expanding upon before the end of the year. We will also be introducing a physical product range and an e learning platform. I am also excited about doing more international work with both individual businesses and Universities/colleges.
I am proud of myself for overcoming the many obstacles that I have faced on my journey to this point. I made so many mistakes in my first business that I ended up having to sell it. I could have decided that business wasn’t for me and got a job. Instead I regrouped, built my knowledge and came back bigger and better. I have built this business in a much more effective way and have generated much more revenues in this business than I ever did in my first business. It was incredibly tough, but I am now in a confident place and know that if I were ever to lose it all again (God forbid), I would be able to bounce back again.
Bouncing back wasn’t easy and getting back to this point in business has taken a lot of hard work. The key lessons I learnt have been implemented into my VISSA framework. 1. Having a clear vision and the step by step actions needed to implement it, is essential to help you stay motivated and make the right strategic decisions to move you forward. 2. You have to innovate or die. Incremental improvements that are client centred, is important in staying both relevant and in demand. 3. Having robust, well informed strategies are key to moving your business forward. Every area of your business should have a strategy as well as an overall strategy for your business. 4. Systemising your business will save time, reduce stress, boost efficiency and increase profits. Do it! 5. Getting accountability will help to motivate you, push you outside of your comfort zone and boost your confidence. Find someone who can be that person for you.
Additionally, the main lesson I learnt is in my mantra: “Think BIG, Take ACTION and Keep PUSHING”. Following this is what has enabled me to reinvent myself and build a new and better business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love dancehall music, so I would definitely take them to one of my favourite underground dancehall parties. One of those places where they don’t use measures to pour the white rum. I would take them to one of my favourite restaurants, either Adians Dining which does amazing Caribbean food. Or Varanasi which is one of the most opulent restaurants I have ever been to. It has a waterfall in the restaurant and the entrance is like something out of a film. I would then probably go to Everyman Cinema as I love going to the movies and they have table service and big comfy sofa style seats. I would then end the weekend with a trip to my favourite spa, Hoar Cross Hall, which is outside of the city, but more than worth the drive. If it was summer, we would definitely take a trip to the Edgbaston reservoir and Cannon Hill Park. Both beautiful local spots.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband Akin. Without him I wouldn’t have achieved half of what I have. He has supported me every step of the way. He celebrates my successes and picks me up and cheers me on when I suffer setbacks.
