We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Macdonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I love to interpret a client’s ideas for a project. I always research the motivation behind that idea, what is the driving force behind it, and what results do they expect. This theme has carried me through my career, and now into my own business. What does a company need? What do they stand for? What does their brand encapsulate? I have always loved to read and write. Like characters in a book, once you know a business’s background, ideology, goals, and aspirations, you are halfway there, in telling their story.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started Event Writers twenty years ago, only working on it part time. My husband’s career was in motorsport, and we traveled a lot. We also lived in Japan for three years. Then I became a mom, with an option to stay at home for a few years, so I could pick and choose the projects I took on. During that time, I noticed a real lack of passion behind print and digital content. Writing was often obvious, churning out questionable facts that had been regurgitated by some large marketing or advertising department where a client’s objectives can be viewed as just another project. I observed a real need for content that had a strong voice and a depth behind the words. I am often a ghost writer for companies too, which helps them portray the words I write as their own.
I am a firm believer if you are true to yourself and have a love for something, push that through your work and great things will happen. After completing a BA in English with Related Arts, I started working on a small publication in England. I was in display sales which was great money as a recent graduate, but this was not what I had studied for. The great thing about that first job was seeing how the entire writing and publication process worked, from the interviews, research, editing, to page layout. The editor even let me write product and event reviews. Obviously, things have progressed since then, but I still have a passion for print. I advanced into writing copy for record labels, business reports and technical writing in addition to journalism for lifestyle, and one of my all-time favorites, alcohol publications.
I soon realized the adoration and attention I had for each, and every project was starting to be noticed. By interpretating the love a company or business owner has for a project, product or brand, the results started coming in quickly. Repeat business and more clients has made Event Writers my dream come true.
I’m not only a freelance writer and editor, but Event Writers is also a translator of objectives, and a brand’s voice for all different kinds of companies and publications.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many wonderful places to visit in Miami but if I had to pick my top things to do, it would start in Wynwood. Grabbing breakfast at Zak the Baker and taking a refill of coffee, I would then take my guest to stroll around the Wynwood Walls looking at all the amazing street art there. I also love the Institute of Contemporary Art. (ICA). We would then head to lunch at La Camaronera Fish Market in Little Havana. It’ not over the top in terms of presentation or price, just great fresh fish, and a very chill vibe. I’m a big shopper, so there’s so many little boutiques dotted about Miami and the best days are when you stumble across one that you have never visited before, and it turns out to have a ton of goodies. My credit card is not so enthusiastic about these kinds of finds.
I would then take my visitor to Bal Harbour Beach. It’s less touristy and there’s also a great path to amble along.
I love to dance and there are numerous of dance hot spots in Miami. I particularly love the Ball & Chain, where there is always something exciting happening at that place.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This would have to be my family and close friends. Their utter faith in me has kept me positive and confident that I can achieve my own ambitions. My late father always encouraged his three children to “Go for it!”, not hesitate and have utter conviction in what we are doing to the best of our ability. This can-do attitude is really the heart of my business.
