We had the good fortune of connecting with Danielle Pottinger-Cooper and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danielle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I know the normal thing to say is ‘I wanted my freedom’ but the reason I began Abound is because I want to leave a direct and positive impact on every client I work with. Many teams when I’ve worked for agencies or other businesses, often times your efforts can be swept under a rug or you’re busy working for someone else’s legacy. With my business, for every client I work with, I have the amazing opportunity of seeing how everything I do at each stage of the process, impact their business. I have the opportunity to spearhead the creatives that’s produced and help to bring their vision to life. I do love the freedom however of picking the type of clients I work with! Whether it be large or small, as long as they line up with my values and I’m able to do the tasks, I LOVE IT!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The thing I believe that sets me a part is the value i bring to each client by immersing myself in their brand. That is my unique selling point. Whatever brand or company I work with, I put my absolute ALL into it and they are an extension of me. I never see them as just another client or company, that brand is now my brand and I treat it as if it’s my very own ‘baby’. I’m most excited to see what other clients I have the opportunity of providing value to. I believe one of the hardest part of this journey are the internal battles we face with recognising our true potential. The initial aspect of securing clients can also be a challenge because you’re not only convincing yourself that you can do this but you have to be showcasing to other why the best choice for their company is you. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to NEVER UNDERVALUE YOURSELF! You know what you bring to the table, you know the results you produce and you know the value you bring, don’t second guess it! I want the world to know that despite small beginnings, my brand will be one of the most impactful. We have a saying in Jamaica, ‘every mikkle, mek a mukkle’ and I’m working to ensure that I invest heavily in my company and myself, one step at a time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So we’ll get the excitement started in Kingston! First enjoying the amazing cultural spots, Devon House for the mansion tour and world famous ice cream, we’re heading up to Blue Mountain at one of the cafes for some good breakfast and cool air. We can’t forget to try some world famous seafood either out by Hellshire or we’ll stop by Gloria’s in Port Royal. Nightlife in Kingston can be fun too, so checking out the themed nights at various restaurants and then we can’t forget to grab some jerk chicken too! Besides the amazing food, Jamaica is well known for its gorgeous beaches! The remaining days will be focused on traversing various parishes and visiting all the amazing sights! For Portland, we can do rafting and of course, grab some more jerk at the Boston Jerk Centre. From there we head north and stop in St.Ann where we’ll find Dolphin Cove, where we can swim and interact with dolphins and sharks and then we head to Mystic Mountain, best known for it’s high speed bobsled ride! Next we travel west towards Trelawny, St.Elizabeth and Westmoreland where we can enjoy Chukka Adventures, the well known Appleton Rum Tour and chill on the beautiful beaches of Negril! Everyday would bring a new adventure and experience in Jamaica!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
FIRSTY, I have to thank God! There is absolutely no way i would have made it this far in my creative journey without Him. Secondly, my husband has been extremely supportive of this journey! He love to boast that he has a wife who is a boss in digital marketing and this encourages me on days when imposter syndrome kicks in! Many times we also have persons who help to nurture us in our careers and they often have no idea how much of an impact this has on us. One such person for me is my mentor Aliceia Valentine. From days of simply asking me to help out with taking pictures for church events to now where she’s referred me for jobs with huge Jamaican/International household brands. I’m forever grateful for the chance she took to help nurture my love for Digital Marketing. It would remiss of me to not mention the agency that really ‘threw me in the deep end’ and helped me to grow as an individual and as a marketer, Elevate Media Group. This is what I would consider my first ‘big break’ into the world of digital marketing. I started out as a contracted live blogger, just helping to cover event and then they hired me as a Digital Strategist. There I began working with brand name companies and had the responsibility of social media management, creative direction, influencer management and the whole works! My experience at Elevate is one that I will never take for granted!
