We had the good fortune of connecting with Darryl Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darryl, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
The Most difficult decision I had to make was leaving my home country and Migrating. After being Established in my country to leave that all behind to literally start from ground zero was a difficult decision.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hailing from the music-filled island of Trinidad & Tobago now residing in Toronto, Canada, Emcee Smee serves every and any event with dynamic precision. Recognized for his high energy, spontaneity and welcomed engagement with the crowd, Smee is quickly becoming an dominant tastemaker in the international Caribbean music scene. With on stage presence and off-stage hospitality, Smee’s diversity is also the preferred choice for corporate functions, weddings, anniversaries and whatever social gathering needs to breathe a life of its own. He surely is the breath of fresh air at any event.
Smee started his journey as a DJ back in 2003 and expanded his craftmanship as a master of ceremonies in 2005. Professionalizing this area of his life came not long after working as a Technical Operator for CCN-TV6 Television Broadcast Station out of Trinidad. This is where his attention to detail and teamwork helped to curate the visual content for events like the Grammys, Fifa World Cup, Machel Montano concert and more. Smee also played a role as a Radio Announcer on Iwer George’s “Talk City” radio Station 91.9 fm and Boom Champions 94.1 fm. To no surprise, his ear for music and entertainment has been trained from a young age. His aunt Carol Addison, Trinidadian soul singer extraordinaire known for opening up for Michael Jackson and working with the likes of Roberta Flack, has been very influential in his life. With instinctive intensity and pleasant demeanor, Smee has been invited to host various events such as Toronto’s The Phoenix, Trinidad’s Point Fortin and Barbados’s Blue Devils jouvert band and will continue to do many more events for the love of connection with others, bringing events to a higher level and most importantly, making people cherish the moment they’re in.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take my friend to my home country for Carnival.Trinidad Carnival is the most immersive cultural experience in the Caribbean. Visitors to the mega festival enjoy a multi-sensory experience that includes, beautiful costumes and designs, soca music, steelpan – invented in Trinidad, energy, dance, performance and food. It is truly the greatest show in the world. The highlight of Trinidad’s carnival experience is the grand street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, although festivities begin just after Christmas and culminate on Ash Wednesday. Expect dozens of high-energy parties and premier cultural competitions along the way. In my view the most fun is on the Beach and Playing has in costumes in the Parade with Friends in Port of Spain
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
