We had the good fortune of connecting with David Collins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When I was 12 years old I picked up my first guitar and everything about it just made sense to me. I taught myself and it quickly became something I felt motivated and healed by. Right away I started trying to write songs and it provided a medium that I could tap into and express who I really feel I am. To be honest I never really fit in well with the everyday hustle life (doing something soul crushing for a paycheck). I am all in on Music because Music is always all in for me. It is there when i need something to lift me up or keep me held down. Music has saved my life countless times. When I didn’t know what else to do in my life, id practice so long Id fall asleep playing my guitar. I started teaching Guitar/Piano in 2016 professionally and I could have never imagined just how incredible it is to see eyes light up and passions grow when my students learn something new or play a song that just hits them and they won’t stop playing! It really is just so cool to be showing others what Music has done for me in my life and to hopefully help them become the artist THEY want to be!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Id have to say I’m most proud of my EP “First Lullaby”. Those 4 songs aren’t just melodies or lullabies to me, they represent and capture the essence of what pure love is, someones soul, the way someone says they love you. Not just saying I love you but the very distinct feeling you get when you let yourself feel what it means to have that love BECAUSE they exist.
I went to college for Audio Production and Recording so I always thought music was gonna be the main focus but I never knew what exactly. After my first band experience I decided to take that 14 years of playing and teaching friends how to play and make a choice to teach. To be honest it doesn’t feel like a job, its still my passion and it will always be. There was a lot of discomfort not knowing what I would do but now I am more comfortable then I have ver been in a career.
I am really excited for this new wave of instrumental and worship music. I can feel it happening and I can already hear the music in the air. My plan is to put together a few shows in the fall and get in the studio to demo song ideas, then id love to release a few singles focused on a much more positive mindset then I feel a lot of people are used to in this world.
I want the world to see through my eyes, hear through my ears, just for a moment in hopes they will experience life the way I do, with gratitude for each day, every single moment is a chance to live even more. If we try our hardest today to fix yesterday, we will always miss out on tomorrow. Music is love, its Gods voice.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely check out a few good hiking spots! Also Minnehaha falls is a wonder to see! I myself love to get fresh air and get some time to relax, so I head up north! I love breakfast so Rubys in Shakopee is a great spot!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to first thank God. He deserves the biggest shoutout! He has sent me constant light and support when life had become so dark I couldn’t see myself any longer. I would not have this opportunity to express my soul and heal through my music without him opening my eyes to see it in my hands.
Next is without any doubt in my mind, Honey Ribar. I could not ask for more than what and who you are, I am beyond thankful for the outpouring of love she has brought to my life. This existence makes sense now. Perfectly. Thank you, from the deepest parts of me. She continues to give me the inspiration to create what I feel. I truly see no limits to her abilities because there aren’t any. Playing and singing with her makes me feel like I am where I am suppose to be. “I love you for all my heart.”
My Mom, Dad, Sarah, Mary, my nieces and nephew, I have always felt so loved by each and every single one of you. You have all inspired me to be myself and play the music that is always playing behind the scenes of life. I will always push forward to leave behind something for them to remember my love for them all. I love you all so much thank you.
I also want to thank Paul Yearby my sponsor who helped me learn to live in recovery not be an addict or alcoholic. He taught me we are all recovering from something, and if I can help anyone, anywhere to feel not alone and like life is going to be ok, I am doing what I’m meant to do.
Hosanna Church has given me the opportunity to play music with God as the leader of the band, I used to imagine being up there praying while I’m playing! Now I get to praise God and at the very same time I’m doing my favorite thing, playing music!
