We had the good fortune of connecting with David De Souza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a creative, it was difficult for me to work a 9-5 job. I was working as a full-time employee with really great people, but I knew I needed to venture out on my own. I began to think about what my business would look like and what my values were. I love community and I knew that I wanted my business to be a conduit to building a community that I felt was lacking in my area. So, I named my business The Filmmaker Society. It is a video production company that also works to bring local filmmakers together.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business started only 3 years ago. Before I started my own company. I was a freelance filmmaker (and much of my work still is freelance filmmaking). I wanted to belong to a community of people who loved cinema as much as I did. I wanted to meet and be friends with filmmakers in my area. With that in mind, I started a production company called “The Filmmaker Society”. On the business end, I hope that The Filmmaker Society can create opportunities to hire local filmmakers to work alongside one another and elevate the stories that need to be told visually. On the community end, I hope to bring all filmmakers and film enthusiasts from our area together and create a real and organic community. I have learned that if I want to belong to such a community, I must be the one to create it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Palm Beach County is truly a gem. There is so much to do from the everglades to the beaches. I would definitely take them Kayaking down the Jupiter Riverbend State Park. I would take them to the beaches in Boca Raton. I’d show them the art museums and galleries like The Arts Warehouse in Delray Beach. The Botanical Garden called Morikami would be beautiful. The Jupiter Lighthouse would definitely be a stop. If they wanted to do some shopping, we could stroll down Mizner Park or go to Simon Malls in Boca. There are plenty of snorkeling opportunities both off shore and down the intercostal. I’d love to take them to some of my favorite food trucks like Cheffrey Eats in Boca Raton or Nomad Surf Shop’s Organic Juice and Food Truck. There are plenty of fine dining as well in every city. I’d show them the Everglades, take an airboat tour and watch the sun set over the wetlands. Movies or live shows would be a great night time activity, there are theaters in every city as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My story couldn’t be made possible without so many people. From my parents to mentors who took a chance on hiring me and giving me an opportunity to work in the film industry. But above all else, my wife has been my biggest support, it is because of her that I am where I am today, and that I have had such an adventure this whole time! My love Nicky Rhea De Souza, you are my biggest encourager and I am so thankful for your never-ending love and support.
