We had the good fortune of connecting with David Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks has played a pivotal role in shaping my life and career, particularly in my journey to overcome obesity and various health challenges. Since childhood, I battled obesity, grappling with issues like high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Growing up with asthma and taking prednisone shots only added to my struggles, as they increased my appetite and contributed to weight gain.

After years of dieting with limited success, I found myself considering gastric bypass surgery as a way to jumpstart my health journey. However, I decided to take a different risk and explore the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting. This decision turned out to be a transformative one. By embracing a lifestyle that included foods I enjoyed and found sustainable, I lost 140 pounds in just two years.

This success opened the door to a world of new possibilities. I took another leap by participating in my first bodybuilding show, an experience that pushed me far out of my comfort zone. Sharing my weight loss story on 12 podcasts and as a guest speaker at Keto Con in Austin, Texas, allowed me to connect with others and inspire them in their own journeys.

As I gained confidence, I wanted more out of life. I pursued the education necessary to become a certified personal trainer and nutritionist, enabling me to help hundreds of individuals achieve their weight loss goals. One exciting opportunity that arose from this journey was signing an athlete contract with Redcon1, representing America’s favorite supplement brand.

On a career level, taking risks helped me transition from a position with little growth to becoming the Director of Resident Life at Covenant Living of Florida. In this role, I oversee activities and fitness programs for seniors, allowing me to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Each risk I’ve taken has taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone leads to incredible growth and opportunities. My journey emphasizes the importance of embracing change and pursuing what truly matters, not just for myself but for those I aim to inspire and support along the way.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a servant at heart, passionate about helping others and advocating for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities for almost 20 years. My journey working with three cities in Miami Dade and Special Olympics Florida has allowed me to engage in various roles that have enriched my life and the lives of many. This commitment to service has now led me to my role as the Resident Life Director at a senior living facility, where I oversee activities and fitness for seniors.

After just a month in this position, I recognize that stepping into this role has pushed me out of my comfort zone. However, I am fortunate to have incredible support from my colleagues, which inspires me to excel. I am excited to collaborate with my new coordinators to create memorable activities and events for our residents, ensuring they enjoy engaging and fulfilling experiences.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to take a moment to dedicate this journey to my incredible wife and our two amazing sons. Without their unwavering support and love, I truly wouldn’t be where I am today. My wife has been my rock throughout my health and fitness journey, cheering me on every step of the way.

I also want to give a heartfelt shoutout to my family, my Special Olympics family, and my close friends. Your encouragement and accountability have been invaluable, helping me stay focused and motivated. Thank you all for believing in me and being such an essential part of this journey.
