We had the good fortune of connecting with David Molho and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what role has risk played in your life or career?
A few years back in time I was working as a composer / sound editor for a top 3 music production house in Miami. It was a great job, your typical 10 to 7++ and then back home. It used to work great for me, as I was being able to learn and grow in the industry, and my personal life started when the work day was over, just like any other person…
It was then when I understood that in order to achieve my personal goals both in work and in my life, those 2 needed to become 1, and I needed to go the extra mile. There was a risk to be taken and that was the right time for it.
I left that great company, that I will be always grateful for, and I took the leap of starting my own business. In the beginning was very hard. I was working definitely more than before and earning considerably less. But it is no coincidence that I was not the first one to go through this. I jumped into new waters, leaving my steady job, in order to achieve a long shot dream. The uncertainty of being an entrepreneur and sometimes feeling lost was guided by the passion I have for what I always wanted: I wanted to build one of the best recording studios in Miami, I wanted to be able to host sessions with artists of all genres, play with them, write with them, record, and make music all day.
My job and my life started to be driven by a common thread. And life takes you to places you weren’t thinking of. Some new unrelated projects appeared and of course I took them, but every decision was made with my mind set on one goal.
Looking back in time, I was lucky by the way everything developed, but also I was prepared and ready for that moment. Synergy is real, and the law of attraction is there all the time. I attracted the right people and they were attracted to me as well; and it was no casualty, it was every single choice I took that led me here today. Serendipity, as my mentor John Storyk always remarks.
It’s hard to take certain choices, but we are here in this world once, and if you are lucky enough to have a clear mind of what you want for your life and your future, the real risk would be not taking that chance.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. After high-school I decided to leave the comfort of my home and go study to Boston at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. I believe that the music blend that I carry in my blood it’s definitely a differential in everything that I do. A mix of The Beatles, my biggest inspiration, and other classic rock bands, plus the 70/80s R&B-Pop style with Earth, Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, and all of that combined with outstanding Argentine artists such as Charly Garcia, Fito Paez, CASH and others, leads to me and to the music I create. I think you can clearly hear my influences both in the music I produce and write. I believe that we haven’t been able to create a music scene that is as influential, pure and whole as the one we experienced between the 60-80s, so part of my journey is in grabbing the best from that and sum it with my personal taste and intuition.
I have been surrounded by recording studios all my life, since I was a little kid following my father music and professional career. All of that living experiences provided me with the inherited tools I have today, and that you can experience when working with me at my studio. The feeling of connection I have with musicians I’ve met only for a few minutes; and the feeling of ending the day knowing that what we are doing is something meaningful and real. That is one of the characteristics that makes me and my studio different from the rest.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Miami, FL. Definitely first place would be coming to my recording studio (Groovyland Studios) in North Miami Beach. Certainly one of the best experiences I can imagine, hanging out with my team of LoSweet Records, and having an Argentine barbecue at the end of the session with wine and Fernet + Coke. You’d want to repeat that.
Then other spots I wouldn’t miss are Lagniappe (great live music by great musicians), stopping for some delicious fugazzeta (onion) pizza at TATORE, the beach – easy one -, and if you are down for some football (soccer) I would take you to Stadio Soccer. If a long night is what you want I don’t have an specific place, the city is full of options and areas that can satisfy your needs. Wynwood would be the first place I’ll go and then… well, the rest is history.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my mom and dad, Silvia and Sergio, and my brother and sister, Ivan and Solange. They’ve always trusted in me, and encouraged me to keep moving forward, constantly reminding me that there is always more to achieve and to fight for. They are also artists and entrepreneurs so they know how hard the road can get, I am forever thankful to them. More recently my muse and inspiration for all everything I do, my wife Andrea. She is an incredible visual artist and her passion for what she does is very similar to mine, we certainly fuse in that area.
At last but not least, the Storyk family. They have been there for me since I can remember and they were (still are) a crucial part of my professional development and growth.
Whoever thinks you can achieve greatness just by yourself, is definitely mistaken. We are stronger when we are together.
