We had the good fortune of connecting with David Núñez-Ariza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success and that of any individual making a brand with themselves front and center is Authenticity.
In today’s social-media-driven climate the onus is on brands and creators to continue pumping out more content to keep their followers (and the algorithms) satisfied. If you start with a shitck, like inserting the word “f*ck” into things that didn’t normally have it, what happens when you run out of ideas or places where you can put the word? That’s when you’re true creativity shows. That’s when you’re left to your own ideas, not things you can take from someplace else. If you went viral off of one thing that doesn’t represent who you are or where you creativity comes from, then you’re going to fade out just as quickly as you came to relevance. But when you’re authentic, when you do the things that you truly love and pour out of you because no one else could make them except for you, that’s when you create a real connection with anyone that follows you.
Also my emails are 10x funnier and hit much more if you’ve met me in real life and then think of my voice and my energy in your head when reading them 🤠
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been a natural writer, but I never considered it as a career. We’re conditioned to believe that we need to get a “real career” like a doctor, lawyer, or something in business or finance. Everyone loves to consume art but they lack respect for the people who want to make it their career. I was lucky enough at one point in my life that I had someone who believed in my writing and encouraged me to make a profit from it. They helped me get started in the marketing and copywriting space and even suggested the graduate program I ended up going through.
It was a great start, but at one point it felt stale. I asked myself, “If I’m really as talented at this writing and creativity sh*t as everyone says why am I wasting my time writing for brands that I don’t believe in? Why am I using my powers to sell people something they don’t want or need?”
As I was going through these thoughts, another friend in my life who has always believed in me was in my ear encouraging me to put my creative writing out there. I wanted to find a way to share my stories and ideas with people that was different from the “side hustle” or “starting a business” ideas that everyone turns to for content these days. That’s how my newsletter, 2️⃣UESDAY, was born. It gave me a way to put out my writing without any expectations except for making awesome sh*t. I want the world to know that not everything has to be for a business or for self-help or ways to get better at whatever your career is. You can also read things just because they’re fun! And that’s what I’m doing. We’re just getting started, but I’m building this into something very very big. Just watch 😎
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First off, you’re coming to one of my yoga classes. Don’t worry, I’ll put you down as my guest 🧘🏽♂️
If we want to check out something in nature I’d take them kayaking at Oleta, a beach day at Matheson Hammock Park, or maybe we take a little trip down to the Keys and discover new things along the way (while we listen to an awesome playlist I made).
If you want to try the best pizza in Miami and the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life I’d take them to Miami Slice right in front of where I live (yes, New Yorkers, there is better pizza than the one outside of your borough simply because it’s $1 and open late, please get over yourselves).
If we’re doing brunch, I’m taking them to Red Rooster (I love fried chicken).
For drinks, I love good cocktails. Spanglish in Wynwood for that. Tank Brewery if you want good beer. And if you’re looking for something lowkey and late night Tipsy Flamingo or OverUnder downtown will never let you down.
Finally, this bar doesn’t exist anymore so I’d like to pour one out for them, but Wood Tavern in Wynwood was my favorite bar in the entire world. It was a great place to kick back, have a cold beer, and listen to great music while people were chilling and having fun. Now every bar has turned into a barclub-clubbar experience where they try to fit as many people into a small room and blast the music while over-charging you for VIP tables if not you need to stand around bumping into other people.
Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
Everyone in my life who believes in me and what I’m capable of. That might sound cliché, but it’s the truth. I consider myself the luckiest person in the world because everyone in my life has always believed in me. A lot of people are driven to success because of a chip on their shoulder and the idea that people always told them they wouldn’t make it. My life has been the complete opposite. Everyone has always believed in me. Sometimes it’s led me to be too harsh on myself and what I accomplish, but on the positive end, it means I have never-ending support from everyone in my life. Every day I’m thankful for it because I know it’s not something that many people can say.
So if you’re reading this right now, thank you! You’re one of the people that believe in me. The simple fact that you would take your time to learn more about me means everything to me. Everything I do, from the success of my yoga classes to my writing, is only possible because people care enough to support me 💝
