We had the good fortune of connecting with DAVID ZULUAGA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DAVID, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I guess everyone who wants to start their own business, thought about the timing and processes, make a real checklist, in my case, it was all about passion for the music (including the steps I said before), the hardest part is taking the risk to start, after you start, you have the duty to mantain your business alive, innovate, recreate. You know in music, everything changes so fast, that´s a real challenge for you to be active and stay current. One of the most important thoughts you have to keep in mind, is patience, success is not inmediate.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Wow, it´s been a long path… Music Production didn’t come at first sight, i remember when i was a child, I really wanted to be a Concert Pianist, and I started to study to become one, when I met Music Production, it was a very hard click in my heart, but I really never study Music Production as a professional degree program, I just started to learn from tutorials, books, and self-practice. That way, I guess is longer, but I´m sure i never regret about my decision. My first steps into music were a little bit hard but there are lovely memories. I started to work when I turned 16 years old, Bar Gigs, Low Budget Show, No-Budget Shows, but everything I did for living with music, was an invaluable earning. Now a days, I have a Latin Grammy Award, 5 nominations, 10 India Catalina Prizes, 3 Produ Awards. If you say that a professional path is easy, my word is no, is not easy, but if you enjoy the path, there are a lot of rewards, go through, go firm, go mind strong.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow, in Miami, everything is funny, but Wynwood is really a lovely place to go for a walk, take a good beer, hangout with your friends, a lot of tasty restaurants.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have the fortune to be surrounded by good people, my parents (Mom and Dad) who supports me since my childhood, my beloved sister, my wife, my little kid Lucas and family in general, they are the most important people in my life. In music, you have the fortune to meet a lot of good people that become your friends (the family you choose). The little credit is for me, the big credit are for God and my family.
