We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Neva Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Neva, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Deciding whether to continue with your business or give up is a significant decision that requires careful consideration. There were times when I considered it worth being a business owner. I have a few different business ventures. In South Florida, I operate Nevalliance, a consulting company, and National Educational Venture Alliance, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization for college admissions counseling. In business, you must work hard at getting new clients, marketing, and generating constant revenue. Here are some factors I have used to assess if I should keep the doors open of a business that wasn’t operating at its full potential.

1. I evaluate my business’s viability by assessing the business’s current state, including financial performance, market conditions, and customer feedback. Is my business generating constant revenue or showing growth potential?

2. I look at the challenges I am facing. Are there specific issues that can be overcome with effort and adjustments? Are there external factors beyond your control that might make it difficult to sustain your business? Understanding the nature of my challenges can help you measure whether it’s worth persisting or if it’s time to explore other options.

3. Review my initial goals and the long-term vision for your business can also help me to determine if I should keep going. If my goals and vision are still meaningful and inspiring, it may be worth exploring alternative strategies or seeking additional support before considering giving up.

Ultimately, the decision to continue or give up on your business should be based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including financial considerations, market conditions, personal goals, and overall well-being. Take the time to reflect, gather information, seek advice, and trust your instincts to make the best decision.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Dr. Neva, the brand, is an educator, speaker, coach, consultant, and speaker of leadership, entrepreneurship, and education. I worked in Saudi Arabia from 2010 – 2013. As a professor and chair of the humanities and social science department female campus, I taught leadership to female students who needed to recognize that women could be leaders in their rights; this led me to author my first book, females guide to understanding leadership. From that, I wanted to continue the work of teaching and leading. I have since created an annual conference, the International Women’s Conference. I speak, train, coach, and write about leadership while I have created a few businesses.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have a few spots. Most of my friends are attracted to Miami Beach or Aventura. The beaches, malls, and nightlife are interesting.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my mother Juliet Mitchell, a businesswoman that remind strong no matter the challenges faced.
