We had the good fortune of connecting with Debra Somerville and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Debra, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’ve learned to say “yes I can” to new situations. As a photographer for over 20 years saying yes when presented with a new photography opportunity, even when unsure, is the best advice I can give. Risk taking is key to success & if you don’t step out of your comfort zone you will never grow! There have been countless times in my career when I have doubted my abilities & talent but non the less persevered. The best advice I received from a pretty famous cinematographer early in my career were 3 simple words, why not you? Step out, take risks, believe in yourself because if you don’t someone else will and “why not you”?

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love working with all kinds of people and businesses & although I began my career photographing models & fashion, lately I have found that shooting lifestyle & branding is what I truly love. I find it very satisfying to create beautiful branding imagery for social media & websites & I’ve been lucky enough to meet some amazing, talented & interesting people along the way. I’m also very happy to live in Delray Beach where I have the option of shooting outdoors year round or in my East Delray studio. I believe what sets me apart from other photographers is my fashion background & versatility. My experience having been on the other side of the camera helps me put clients at ease & I also love shooting products & interiors so if you hire me it’s one stop shopping! My proudest moments are when my client begins a photo session by saying, “I hate getting my picture taken” and leaves saying “wow that was fun, I can’t wait to see the photos”!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well since I live in Florida I would take my best friend straight to the beautiful beaches here in Delray! We would go to Atlantic Ave for a little shopping & then happy hour at one of the many fabulous restaurants. Since my husband is the best cook around we would spend many evenings cooking in & hanging out at the pool!

Mornings would begin with a beautiful in home yoga practice & then smoothies & yogurt with fresh fruit. If we’re feeling energetic I would also take her to my favorite French Bakery for Ice’d coffees and croissants

If here for a week I would take her to Miami to experience the amazing Art & Graffiti walls at the famous Wynwood Walls, then an early dinner for people watching & great food at the Miami Design District.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a big shout out to my husband, Anthony Casey, my biggest cheerleader. Being an entrepreneur can sometimes be a lonely business & I am so grateful for his consistant encouragement & support & for always reminding me of my talents & worth even when I have self doubts.
