We had the good fortune of connecting with Decrim 305 Mistress Bruja and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Decrim 305, what principle do you value most?
Decrim 305 is focused on decriminalizing sex work in Miami-Dade County and beyond. Our principles and mission lie in ethical practices that lead to the liberation of all sex workers. Sex workers are human beings deserving of love, compassion and human rights. It’s our goal to see that future met. Decrim 305 is made up of current and former sex workers, it’s a bit personal for us but ultimately we believe whether or not we are from the industry, sex workers deserve the right to unionize and advocate for themselves. We host an annual Slut Walk on South Beach in December to raise awareness on these issues. We have plans to introduce decrim legislation in the future.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It’s no easy task spreading the word on decriminalizing. It requires a lot of emotional labor in terms of education on sex work, sex workers and why we want to decriminalize versus legalize. I think it’s a lot for someone to wrap their head around in a society that promotes purity propaganda. There’s already a huge lack in basic sex education, the idea that it’s acceptable to sell sex regardless of the OnlyFans age is still a pretty foreign thought to most. We’ve found that our best successes have been in direct community outreach such as passing out free condoms and narcan to the public. It creates a non judgemental, non stigmatized dialogue between folks from all walks of life. We have plans for more community events in 2022 to keep spreading the word on this very important issue.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Even if you’re out of town I think it’s valuable to keep in touch on current events in the cities you go to. So many incredible local orgs put together fun events that raise money for great causes. Check the Pridelines calendar, or come to one of our STI testing parties. It’s fun, easy and makes for a great tale to share back home. We learn new things every single day, learning about your community and it’s goals is precious.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We are a community based organization and no one accomplishes anything alone. We would like to specifically thanks our partners and community members who help to make our goals accessible. We could not do any of the work we invest in without Pridelines, Aids Health Foundation South, Period Miami, Reflect, Yaya Por Vida, Miami Recovery Project and Decriminalize Sex Work. All of these amazing orgs have offered so much support, compassion and grace to us. We’re so thankful and humbled by the community.
