We had the good fortune of connecting with Dee Mendez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dee, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My professional background is in technology, but I have loved organizing since I can remember. It became an outlet to be more artistic since you’re not really able to do that being in the technology field. I would organize for myself mostly, but I found myself doing it more and more for family and friends. So, one day I thought, can I actually do this for a living? I brought up the idea to a few close friends and to my surprise they all agreed that this was something I should go forward with! From there I came up with the name dee-clutter as a play on words with my nickname since everyone calls me Dee, and the rest is history.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets dee-clutter apart from others is that we provide our clients with a system customized to their specific needs. While I love to provide an aesthetically pleasing final product, it is not the main focus. I want to give my clients something that is sustainable so that the upkeep doesn’t feel overwhelming. We want to make sure that our clients feel comfortable with their newly organized space.
I’m excited that professional organizing is becoming more and more popular. It’s no longer something foreign for people to hire someone to organize their homes or offices. I think the pandemic really caused that shift in a lot of folks, because they were home a lot more than ever and realized that they preferred to live and work in an organized space. A lot of people are also learning to live with less, they’re interested in more minimalistic lives, and that entails some purging and organizing of things that they might have been hanging onto for a long time. That’s where professional organizing comes into place so I’m excited to continue helping as many people as I can!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many fun things to do and good food to eat! I will try to narrow it down to a few. First and foremost, if you’re coming to South Florida, you must visit either Fort Lauderdale or Hollywood Beach. You can either have a fun beach day by laying out in the sun or take a walk on the Broadwalk in Hollywood Beach. I love eating by the water so Boatyard for brunch, and Coconuts or Kaluz for dinner. If you want to do some shopping Las Olas has many shops to choose from. If there’s time and you want to explore something outside of Broward County, I’d recommend Mizner Park in Boca Raton or Wynwood in the Art District of Miami.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to recognize Ciara Gravier. As a seasoned business owner herself she has been instrumental in my growth as a small business owner. Ciara has helped me tremendously to understand and navigate the business aspect of things since it was all so new to me when I first began. She has become a person that I can go to whenever I have questions or when I just need a good pep talk.
