We had the good fortune of connecting with De’Nasia Grayson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi De’Nasia, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe so many people are afraid to take risks simply because of the unknowns and the what ifs. While I feel that it is normal for us all to be a little afraid of failure, we should really try to use that fear as further motivation for us to live out our dreams. When I first created What’s Tea Company there’s a lot of things that went through my head. “Will people like my products?” “Who would I market to and how will I do it?” “Will my products work?” These are some of many questions that haunted me throughout the planning process of my business, However I quickly realized that those small moments of uncertainty had to become the fuel to the fire that would soon become a thriving business. For me the fear of failure couldn’t compete with my drive for success and representation. What’s Tea is more than just a tea company for me, it’s a tea company owned and operated by a Black Queer identifying woman and it was designed to help those who suffer with those same bodily conditions that are dismissed by professional medical practitioners on a day to day basis. Even though creating and running a successful business is one of the hardest most nerve wrecking things I’ve ever done so far, I know that its purpose will outshine all of the hard days and sleepless nights. The risk will always be worth it.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Starting a business in the beginning of a Global pandemic has been an experience of nothing but trial and error. I’ve had some amazing days and then I’ve had some days that really backed me into a corner and made me second guess my decision of becoming a business owner. But of course there’s not one business owner that has built their business from the ground up that will tell you that its easy and there’s no stress involved. All of the hard things that you have to deal with come with the territory. What’s Tea was born because I felt like I wasn’t getting the right amount of help I desired from medical professionals. I always felt like the problems I was experiencing were getting covered up by different pain medications but the actual problems weren’t getting treated. This caused me to start looking into natural healing. So the things that worked for me I hoped would work for others and here we are today. I have learned to stay patient and never stop believing in yourself or your product. I like for things to go exactly how I want them to go but being a business owner I very quickly realized that its not always about the timing i’m requiring, but more so about the timing that God has put in place. Not only do I want people to know my business for having enjoyable luxury teas, but also the story behind how my business came about. I want to spread more awareness to natural healing remedies because it has changed my life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love being from Atlanta because its such a beautiful city and there’s so much to do when you’re visiting. Of course we would have to go to all of the good food spots like King Crab ATL, Fin and Feathers, Harold’s chicken, BBQ Masters, Moreau’s oven, and more. Then we have to get into some fun activities like a cute wine night at Painting with a twist, the Georgia Aquarium, Botanical Gardens, and maybe even Six Flags. Atlanta is known for it’s night life where you never know who you’re gonna run into so of course I would have to show her around. Overall there’s an endless list of fun festivities that I would love to explore with my best friend and I have no doubt that the experience would be anything less than amazing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am blessed to have an amazing support system when it comes to any and everything that I do. Everybody around me has done nothing but try to shine a positive light on my business and I’m more than grateful. Of course there are key people in my life that always go above and beyond to ensure that my business thrives. I would first like to highlight my parents for always instilling in me that I can do anything I put my mind to and always being supportive of my vision even when they don’t understand what I’m talking about lol. Then you have my baby sister ,De’Jah, that is always giving me creative ideas for marketing and branding when it comes to my business. She’s literally the mastermind behind a lot of upcoming projects that I’m currently working on. Of course I can’t leave out my Girlfriend, Nehmiah. She’s honestly one of my BIGGEST cheerleaders. Every new idea I have I run by her and she never steers me in the wrong direction. From helping with inventory, promoting, being a taste tester for all of my new teas, I;m forever grateful for the love and positivity she pours into me and my business. Last, but certainly not least I have to shoutout some my big boss friends that always find a way to support and pour into my business even though they have their own businesses to run. My Best Friend Peanut (Founder and CEO of Take it Easy Beauty Esthetician Services), My Right hand Ash (Founder and CEO of YelshaKutz and Yelsha Clothing brand), and My good sis Deb (Founder and CEO of Filthy Xpress that has all of your accessory needs). Like I said, I received a lot of support but these people are more than supporters, they’re family and they always help me to perfect my craft and i’m forever grateful.
