We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Hadley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derrick, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my company on Memorial Day Weekend 1999 when I had my first Motown Tribute show. The movie “The Temptations came out in November of 1998. The movie inspired me to form a Motown Tribute Production. The storyline of BG and how he made them a universal group to the liking of people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds enjoyed Motown music and this was my desire to do the same and make people feel good. This music appeals to the young and mature and this continues to be a well-received genre of music today.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a professional show production producer and performing singing artist. I have a diverse repertoire of various styles of singing including Broadway, pop standards, Motown, and R&B. My Motown Tribute Production gives me great joy as I have developed a following with appreciative audiences, accomplished professional singers, and musicians and has resulted in many sold shows throughout the years. It has been pure determination and commitment that keeps my dream alive, although challenging at times, I continue to hold on to my dream and further develop my production and expand my territory. I have learned to be patient in turns of reaching success by always giving a great and stellar performance. Our brand is to deliver classic Motown and be as authentic as the original Motown artists brought to the stage.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my best friends to Las Olas Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale – love the shops and entertainment; VFWPost 8195 in West Park for the old school R&B music; Pompano Beach for beach comfort as moderate attendance and not as crowded; Sawgrass Mall in Sunrise has the best outlets and deals; and Carrabbas Restaurant has good Italian and Continental food. Also, I would take my friend on an overall car tour of South Florida to view the beautiful scenery.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize my success to my mother, Dolores Manddras, who was a classically trained pianist and choral music teacher. She graduated from the accredited well know HBCU, Florida A&M University. She was trained by her mother, Thelma King, who attended New England Conservatory in Boston during the Roaring 1920s. My Mother’s music master-apprentice program, along with my wife, Revella Hadley, Vice President, and Lawanda Joseph, Business & Band Manager, have been supportive every step of the way and their support collectively contributed to my overall success.
