We had the good fortune of connecting with Destiny and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Destiny, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I have a curly hair business and growing up that was the hardest thing to find, especially with me having curly hair. There was no salons, mentors. or guidance for me when I was trying to learn how to embrace my curly hair at the time. I had to learn everything on my own. I did so much research for so many years(yes my mom use to think I was crazy when I was always on my laptop researching hair and writing down things in my notebook). I was just so thirsty to learn about curly hair and what it was because I had it and I didn’t know what to do with it. I learned about products, routines, what was good and what was bad to put into your hair, the benefits of oils and butters, how a microfiber towel is best for the hair.. you named it, I learned it. & I am self taught. I taught everything on my own and through my own experiences with my hair. I’ve always had this vision since I was 14 years old and I never gave up on it, no matter what life threw at me. Covid really opened up my eyes to many different things and one thing for certain that I saw a lot of changes was in the Curly Hair Community. I saw many people on and off social media starting to embrace their curly hair more often. One of the biggest issues I was hearing often was that people didn’t know how to take care of their curls. They always had issues with frizz, or their curls wouldn’t last, or the product they were using didn’t make their hair feel good.. There was just so many questions people had and no answers. & it made me think to myself, these have been on going issues for so long for us curly queens/kings out here. I believe what my business offers can help many curly queens/kings out there who need guidance on their curly hair journey. I do work behind the chair and run a small independent curly hair business. I offer services such as curl lessons, one on one training, treatments, hair cuts, and color as well. My goal is to help people embrace their curly hair and achieve their goals.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m excited for what 2023 has to bring when it comes to my career. I have so many great services and ideas that I’m manifesting this year towards my business that’s not only going to change my life, but others in the curly hair community as well. I have a few new services as I previously mentioned before that I’m excited about because it will change someone’s life and that makes me feel good. I set daily, weekly, and monthly goals to keep me focused on being the best version of myself. One of the first things that pop up into my head in the morning is what’s one thing I could I do today that will bring me closer to my goals and make me a better person than I was yesterday. I’m always trying to be on top of my game when it comes to being a curly hair specialist. I’m always reflecting back on how my day went. There’s always room for growth and that’s the beauty of passion. Passion just gives you a different feeling you can’t really explain, but it keeps you wanting to grow more no matter what is being thrown at you. My path is not easy. There are so many things that tried to distract me and keep me off course. I do believe God puts those things on your path for a reason. No matter what happens in life, I always keep God next to me. They say a powerful woman keeps her prayers up!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly there’s so much to see in South Florida. Since this is going to be a week long trip, we’re going to have to start in West Palm and work our way down to Miami! West Palm is definitely a vibe. We would definitely have to visit the West Palm Outlets to shop a little bit. Clematis has all the night life which would be a spot and I love Spruzzos as well. Going down south, we have to make that stop at World Famous in Boynton because who wouldn’t want some eggrolls on the go! I love Delray. I use to go there every weekend. Atlantic is a great little Ave. They have so many different restaurants and bars. Wine room, Throw Social, Roccos Tacos, El Camino and Deck 84 are good places to try. OG has good vibes for a night life. They also have the Delray marketplace where there’s a lot more restaurants and entertainment as well. & the Morikami Museum is a mst see! Going down to Boca, I do work east and they have so many good food places to try as well. I do love going to Al Reef in Boca. Its a family owned business and they have food, music, and hookah if someone likes that vibe! Deerfield has a beautiful beach and peer that I like going too. So relaxing and its good to get connected. Fort Lauderdale has everything: restaurants, bars, parks, brunches, shopping centers, activities. The Wharf, American Social, Yolo, Water Taxi, Salt7, Boatyard, Victoria Park, are just a few places to mention that I enjoy. Hollywood beach is great as well! I have so many memories there. They have a boardwalk by the beach and they have restaurants and bars as well. Taco Bar is my favorite! Love the vibes and the environment. & of course Miami has everything! There’s never a dull moment in Miami. You can literally see everything. Activities, tours, nightlife, shopping, brunches, beaches, museums, There is just so much to do and see. I love the Brickell area. Sugar is one of my favorite places.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to Katrina. Katrina owns Curlspiration Hair Salon, the salon I’m currently working in right now. I’ve been working there for a little over a year now and there has been so much progress. Katrina guided me and mentored me when it came to curly hair. She taught me how to cut curly hair, gave me lots of training, taught me about products and so much more. She has been in the industry for some time now and she’s a great mentor to have when it comes to curly hair, I thank God for giving me such a beautiful opportunity. It was given to me at the right time and I always trust Gods plan.
