We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Shelton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devin, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?

The following habits make me successful:

1. I always smile. I’ve learned that a person can hear your smile over the phone. (Smile, it’s just easier that way)
2. Follow through on my commitments. (If I say I’m going to do something, I do it)
3. Setting goals with deadlines. (Goals hold me accountable)
4. Attending networking events (Get rooted in the community)
5. Having a willingness to learn and adapt to change. I enroll in classes to stay up to date on employment laws or new ways to do things. (Work smarter not harder)
6. Never give up. (There is always a way)
7. I keep an attitude of Gratitude (being grateful and humble goes a long way)
8. Prayer – I pray daily (Faith is important)

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I have over 20 years of recruitment experience. I worked for a fortune 500 staffing agency as a Recruiter. I decided that it was time for me to venture off and work hard for myself. I’ve been the CEO & Founder of Devine Management Consulting, LLC (aka DMC), since July 2020. We are based out of Peoria, AZ.

We work remote, providing Recruitment and Human Resources Administrative support services to improve the performance of organizations nationwide. Our talent is finding yours. Our Mission is to deliver operational excellence by building trust and respect by understanding a client’s need. And listening to a candidate’s experience and skills. Then matching clients with candidates alike that are aligned with each other’s expectations.

Our Values are the following:
Integrity & Ethics – We understand what it takes to build long lasting relationships, as a result we are honest and truthful. We communicate with compassion and understanding with kindness and respect while delivering on our commitments to candidates, clients, staff, and vendors.

Care – We work hard at understanding and listening to our clients and candidates needs. We strive to be a positive impact on those we encounter by providing recruitment support to clients and life changing career opportunities to candidates.

Courage – We have faith that we will and can overcome any obstacles by believing there is always a way to solve or overcome any situation.

Service Excellence – We take pride in our work. We let our clients and candidates know they’re valued and understood by providing excellent customer service to maintain our favorable reputation.

Having past issues with past 1099 contractors not returning equipment and previous clients not paying their invoices, prompted me to create contracts. I have an equipment policy contract and an Independent Contractor Agreement. As a small business owner, I learned that contracts are important. Contracts set the expectations of both parties and protect your business.

Most people who are in this field of work hire a professional marketing and/or sales team to promote their business to attract clients. I have found platforms to market and promote my services such as Upwork. I found my first client on that platform. I no longer use the platform; it was too costly. I had to think outside the box, network, and advertise my business by word of mouth.

My name is my brand and as a result I pride myself on providing excellent customer service to my clients. By being available to discuss issues as they arrive, and delivering on my commitments, my clients return when they have a need. They also refer me to their business network.

I would suggest all business owners register with their local nonprofit agencies in their area. The agencies have given me opportunities to grow my business. As an entrepreneur it is important to attend networking events. The agencies keep me abreast on upcoming networking events.

Devine Management Consulting, LLC has acquired the following certifications in the past 6 months WBENC, WOSB, SBE, DBE, & ACDBE. I am most proud of this achievement. Being certified opens more opportunities for the business when bidding on government contracts. I currently have 5 clients.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I love to shop, eat, sight see, lights, and laugh. If you ever come to Peoria, AZ head over to the Arrowhead Mall to do some shopping, or down to Tanger Outlet Mall in Glendale, AZ. When you finish shopping, go across the street to Westgate District Entertainment area. During sunset hours, enjoy a beautiful oasis with lights, waterfalls, seating area, live bands, and snap a few pics. There are bars, restaurants, streaming lights all over, bowling alley, and candy stores. It’s something for all ages.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

It’s important to have a support system. My mother (Denise), daughter (Raven), and sons (Domonick & Ramondo) have been supportive of me.

My mother gives me general advice on business decisions. Raven assists me with administrative tasks as needed pro-bono. Domonick helps me during my busy time of the year providing excellent customer service to my clients and candidates. Ramondo reviews and assists me with editing my policy’s, contracts, and phone screens.
