We had the good fortune of connecting with Diamos Demerritt, Joe Wesley, Katana Malone, and Erica Weste and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diamos Demerritt, Joe Wesley, Katana Malone, and Erica Weste, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
Our end goal, is to create a beginning for those who come behind us. To pave the way for young, minority entrepreneurs who are passionate, pioneers in their field. To build a brand that not only represents our people, but tells black stories without those stories being told for us. Our end goal is to give back to the community by showcasing that we are more than just a quote or a hashtag, but are thriving in business, technology, culture, education, and entertainment. To prove that, by coming together, we can do far more. We aspire to continue promoting local talent, businesses, artists, and locations beyond what the world sees of South Florida. To bring the people together in ways that nourish us with great content and bring us together for important matters like self defense and mental health. Our end goal, is to build something that lasts long after we are gone.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Anpu Productions is a black-owned production company based out of South Florida. Rather than the “typical” group of film-minded individuals, we are also well versed in multiple layers of film, music, and photography.
The President, Diamos Demerritt, is not only a writer, but has experience in collegiate sports and is an actor, writer, musician, and creator. Co-president, Joe Wesley, is also a photographer. Vice President, Katana Malone, is also an award winning actress, artist, model, and writer. Casting Director, Erica Weste, is also a writer.
We are most excited about continuing to bring the people new content. We are constantly working on new material, from documentaries and music videos, web-series, feature films, and continuing to bring the award winning series, “To Each His Own,” to the people.
Professionally, the entire team has found that their talents are well combined to overcome any challenges they face. Where one may be weaker in one area, another may be stronger. Within the same breath, each of the members works together to teach one another their respective strengths. Along the way, the lessons have been plenty. One of the greatest lessons we have learned has been the power of the people. The importance of communicating with the people who support us and taking in their feedback. We have learned how vital it is to support the businesses around us and build the community in the process.
We want the world to know that we are in full control of our narrative and story. We want to shed light on topics that most do not talk about, rather than have those stories told for us.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our favorite spots would include the “non-typical” areas. We’d want them to see the historic locations and local black businesses. When it comes to events, parties, or just to see beautiful graffiti and art, Wyndwood is ideal. For culture, Sistrunk and Overtown have history. As far as dining, Vybe305, Chef Creole, and House of Mac are amazing. Vegan and vegetarian friends can enjoy Vegetarian Restaurant by Hakin. For activities, Extreme Axe, local fairs and markets, and music and art exhibits are always live.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’d like to dedicate our shoutout to the family and friends that supported us throughout the journey. The actors who dedicated their time and talents to our projects. We’d like to dedicate our shoutout to the fans who support us and built with us via social media and YouTube. The restaurants, businesses, artists, and sponsors who have allowed us to share their spaces, time, funding, and products. We are grateful for everyone who has played a role in our development and continue to support us to this day.
